I've been looking at a set of wheels and I'm wondering if they would fit.
they are 8x17" ET20. I know that I will need hub adaptors from 5x120 down to 5x100 but will anything else be needed? Spacers etc. I'm a bit clueless when it comes to wheels really!

You wont get et20 17x8's on, plus the adapters ontop will bring them down to at least et5. Standard offset is 35-41 so the wheel will be poking out up to 36mm more and be an inch wider.
Im running 17x8's et33 front and et25 rear and only just get away with minimal rubbing

Thanks, I expected that. They were designed to go under the arches of an E39 5 Series so I wasnt hopeful. So I'm looking for ET35 to 41 or lower than 20? Sorry 
You can get away with lower offsets on the rear, like down to et15 on a 7 inch wide wheel. If you look at wheels that arnt 5x100, they need to be at least et40 if going on the rear and et45 if going on the front as the adapters are at least 15mm thick. Porsche wheels are good for adapting on at they are 50+.

I was looking at a set of 17" Turbo Twists from a Boxter as I'd seen them on a few other Ibiza's. I wanted something different though and the 5 Series splits looked great. Suppose I could get a set of Twists and start looking for something completely new once I've got a bit more money

Yeh the twists look good, think i was the first to do it a few years back but theres been quite allot since haha

They are bbs rk504 with 195-40-17 tyres et35 all round with 20mm spacers on the rear. Sold it over a year and a half ago, its still pretty local but on the last set of wheels i bought for it.

Right, I've read through most of the thread and searched, so please forgive the newbie question, but:
My 05 PD130 FR alloys have gone "porous" and the tyres are losing air. I want to replace them with SEAT OEM wheels but they want £800+. Stuff that. So, am I correct in thinking I need:
5x100 spacing?
57.1mm hub bore size?
an ET value between 35-42 ish?
I want to put my existing tyres back on the new wheels. The tyres are 205/45/16 so obviously I need a 16" rim, but, what rim width do I need please?
As I understand it the 7.0J refers to 7" and a J shaped rim. If the tyres are 205mm do I need a 8.0J rim? i.e. 8 inches is the closest to 205mm (203.2mm)?
Or can I fit a narrower rim than the tyre width?

You can fit a narrower tyre than rim. It's called stretch.
I think for 7J, standard size is 195/205's, but don't quote me.

What if the tyre is wider than the rim, is that ok or not? My 205/45/16s are 8.07 inches wide but if I use a 7J rim, isn't that only 7 inches wide?
