ok, so i changed my thermostat at the weekend, filled the coolant up, let it run for a while, got it up to temperature, turned the heating on (topping up the coolant along the way).

started the car later that night to go out, and after a couple of second the coolant light started beeping and flashing (cold engine). took cap off coolant and put back on, started car again, beeping stopped and no flashing light.

next day started car, beeping an flashing again [:@] !!!

sometimes it beeps and flashes sometimes it doesnt..completely random, only tends to happen when cold !!

amd i looking at a dodgy coolant temp sensor maybe ? will spray some WD40 on it later but...what the hell lol  anyone experienced this ???

Cheers guys

Sounds like you need to either buy a new coolant bottle or try cleaning the level sensor by giving it a little scrape with a screw driver, I think there's instructions in here somewhere.

Cheers for the link. What are these prongs everyone keeps mentioning? Are they the bits the sensor reads from? I'll have to have a look in the morning when it's light.

Keep getting the problem on start up, then light goes off for ages then just comes on again randomly. Temp never goes above 90 degrees either. Doing my head in!

are you loosing any coolant? have you eliminated the chance of there being a leak in the system? i had the same issue...changed all of the above and then it turned out to be slight split in a hose.

The cost of a coolant temp sensor you would be best buying a new one, caker to fit aswell.

Been reviewing over the past couple of days and yeh, loosing coolant it seems! Only seems to be enough to trigger this warning buzzer/light intermitently, as it will sound and flash, then go off, then do it again some time later. Temp never gos above 90 and when on the motorway it drops to about 75.

Its going into my local vag specialists tomorrow for a look over, just want it fixing and dont want to spend any more of my own time on it, ill just have to get the cupra out the garage and man the work commute for a couple of days in it

That's over cooling, thermostat gets my vote.
Maybe the stat is leaking?

See i read a thread about a thermostat going, then got in my car and this happened  was also thinking similar, specialist has already mentioned the housing might be leaking or the bottom on the radiator corrodes on them? Not clued up on mk3's at all, only had it a month or so

Yeah not clued up on mk3's i was passing so posted lol

Could be a worn rad too.
Place some cardboard under the rad area and see if it shows and drops.

could be a number of things mate, like you said, best get it checked out instead of throwing money at it.

let us know what the outcome is, and hopefully it is just a dodgy thermo :)

I've been keeping a close eye out for leaks but it only seems to do it whilst its on the move, its trying my patience

As you say, ill leave it to the professionals and hopefully its not going to be too expensive! This was supposed to be my reliable daily and in a month its proving to be worse than my mk4 cupra (only had a maf go in a year and 3/4 months) typical eh!

Cheers for the help lads
