Hi all, I've noticed recently on start up there's blue/grey smoke coming from the exhaust. I know this could just be recirculated vapours but I've noticed when i stop the car when the engine's fully warmed up when I get out there's a burning smell under the hood :| does this mean it's more likely to be oil seals in the turbo? and does this mean it's time to start saving for a new one?

also noticing when free wheeling (in gear) there is a sort of loud high pitch whining noise coming from the turbo, the missus says it's always been there but I'm not convinced!

any info on this would be greatly appreciated!

I've always had a puff of blue/grey smoke on start up don't think it's anything to worry about.

Dunno about the rest...

Grey smoke is normal, well for me anyway. Done it from the day I drove it from the forecourt 7 years ago! If it's blue then I'd be a bit worried but I doubt it could be from the turbo if it's doing it from a cold start. I might be wrong tho

Are you sure the high pitch noise is from the turbo? Could be any number of things

I've read that the blue smoke can be caused by wearing of the oil seals on the turbo and that the only fix is to replace it :|and as for the burning smell, i'm pretty sure it's burning oil. maybe time to fit a catch tank and see if the problem eases? the whole thing is due a clean and flush any way

I'd say yes if the turbo was hot but if it's cold there won't be enough heat to make oil hot enough to smoke in my opinion. Not until the engine has been running for a couple of minutes anyway

i know i have a few turbo issues which is why i posted it, most of the pd130 make a slight whistle when cold but mine is especially bad probably due to the smaller blt gasket fitted to the egr. My VNT mech is dodgy as hell atm and screeches under throttle on occassions

Yeah mines is slightly whistly, but not so that you can hear it in the car. Hope mine last for a long as i keep the car, don't fancy forking out for a new one :(

I have a very similar situation, I have a 2006 Ibiza Cupra TDI 160 Standard map. When I start the car from cold (Only) i get alot of grey/ really light blue smoke. and with it a strong smell of deisel with a hint of burning.

The car had a new turbo about a year ago and have only just noticed this issue. The car pulls very strong through the gears no funny whining noises and hardly any smoke when warmed up. This only ever seems to happen from cold.

Any ideas?

Have you checked to see if you have any boost leaks or how dirty your EGR valve is?

I have checked for boost leaks as best i can simply by looking. What's the best way to check the EGR? Never checked that before.

Thanks

Remove the boost pipe from the EGR and shine a torch inside to see if it's caked.

If you don't know where the valve is, follow the boost pipe on the left as it bends 90' right The spaceship looking thing is the EGR. If you cant see inside, take it off and look.
