Leon 1P Vag-Com Cable ** Canbus OBD Diagnostics**

Ordered a 10.6 cable from DHgate. Tried to install the software off the mini CD, but apparently it has a virus/Trojan in it. So I downloaded a non-virus version from elsewhere. Also have the 704 version from the bay. With either version when doing the USB test, I keep getting "cable is not plugged into car".
Can someone explain the best procedure I should be following? Is the car meant to be running or just half ignition? Do I plug the cable into the car first then the laptop? Is there a sequence to follow or does the sequence not matter.
Also how hard am I to push when plugging into the car. It just feels a bit loose.
Hosts file (3 addresses) was edited before any software etc was installed. I have tried changing clock back, this stops both VCD versions complaining about being out of date. But still cant get past the test part.
Anyone have any suggestions?

I picked my cable up from DHgate too - but the content on the miniCD fails to run or install (media error / corrupt files, whenever I try running or copying it)! Not virus related though.
Seller has been quite vague, and not provided me with a solution - also not providing a replacement CD with the software on either!
It is intended for a VAG pre-FL 1P vehicle. Any link to where I can pickup the software?

I set it back by about 6 months or so, i have version 10.something so you might have to Keep trying until you dont get the out of date msg.
Ignore my earlier post as it is now working with the software that came on the CD with the cable. I think the virus was a false positive (hope so). Setting date to Sept 2010 gets rid of out of date message. But having correct date does not seem to stop mine working.

Looks a more 'official' solution by clever use of VAG banners at the top but the cable and disc look very similar to the DHGate one I've ordered above. Slight difference in price though, mines only £17 delivered so that'd be the only reason I'd go for the cheaper one first.
EDIT:
Actually reading more about the company on their website VAG-Diags seem to be offering cables and software that mean you are legit as far as Ross-Tech are concerned, so assume no messing with hostfiles and internet blocking to make sure the cable works. They also promise good support so I'd go for it if I were you Eric and let us know what its like, in case my cable's crap..!

yeah i agree with the above, looks identical to my cheap cable and even comes with the identical cheap mini cd - just buy a cheap one!
