Right, i'm going to lay to rest the big colour debate over ovni yellow right now.
There is so much miss information on forums I think it needs to be accurately displaced.
The paint:
Ovni yellow is a basecoat colour, tbh pretty much all colours from the last 5 yrs or so are, taking in to account Vauxhall and some lower brands.
What does basecoat mean?
Basecoat is a painted pigment of colour that requires an additional layer of protective clear coat (lacquer) to protect it.
But what’s clear coat /lacquer?
Lacquer is a protective coating that provides the shine to your car, not only does it shine, it also chemically resists things like salts and acids not to mention harmful uv light.
What’s the problem with ovni yellow?
Ovni yellow is a very weak pigment based paint, tbh most yellows are.
The problem how ever does not lie with the basecoat but the clear that has been applied or more the case lack of. There simply isn’t enough clear on there to protect the paint underneath from harmful uv light, and this in turn tarnished the colour underneath.
What can be done?
Well take your car to any bodyshop, or detailer and they will all say they can buff it up, the paint has simply faded, now in 2 out of 10 cases this can be true, this is known as oxidisation,
What’s oxidation?
This is when the top coat either clear coat/lacquer or a single stage colour has been tarnished by harmful containments a result can be seen below
This is a corsa, it is a solid red (no clear coat) this is why they fade. They get bleached.
To remedy this you can use machine polishers and cutting compounds to bring it back up
This is not the same for ovni yellow unfortunately 8/10 times it needs to be repainted.
But then why are my plastics the new colour and not faded?
This can simply be because they are plastic, and paint reacts different on plastic, as does the absorption of uv, or that they simply get painted in a different part of the factory and have more clear on them.
