Right, i'm going to lay to rest the big colour debate over ovni yellow right now.

There is so much miss information on forums I think it needs to be accurately displaced.

The paint:

Ovni yellow is a basecoat colour, tbh pretty much all colours from the last 5 yrs or so are, taking in to account Vauxhall and some lower brands.

What does basecoat mean?

Basecoat is a painted pigment of colour that requires an additional layer of protective clear coat (lacquer) to protect it.

But what’s clear coat /lacquer?

Lacquer is a protective coating that provides the shine to your car, not only does it shine, it also chemically resists things like salts and acids not to mention harmful uv light.

What’s the problem with ovni yellow?

Ovni yellow is a very weak pigment based paint, tbh most yellows are.
The problem how ever does not lie with the basecoat but the clear that has been applied or more the case lack of. There simply isn’t enough clear on there to protect the paint underneath from harmful uv light, and this in turn tarnished the colour underneath.

What can be done?

Well take your car to any bodyshop, or detailer and they will all say they can buff it up, the paint has simply faded, now in 2 out of 10 cases this can be true, this is known as oxidisation,

What’s oxidation?

This is when the top coat either clear coat/lacquer or a single stage colour has been tarnished by harmful containments a result can be seen below

This is a corsa, it is a solid red (no clear coat) this is why they fade. They get bleached.

To remedy this you can use machine polishers and cutting compounds to bring it back up

This is not the same for ovni yellow unfortunately 8/10 times it needs to be repainted.

But then why are my plastics the new colour and not faded?

This can simply be because they are plastic, and paint reacts different on plastic, as does the absorption of uv, or that they simply get painted in a different part of the factory and have more clear on them.

Hope this helps

and the failure of SEAT to apply lacquer fast enough after base colour so the lacquer does not adhere to the base. and flakes off

depends, yellow isn't to bad you just have to know how to do it, you need a ground coat that suits the yellow. other than that its easy.

matching yellows edge to edge can be a mare though

Issues with yellow

Hi Guys

im new here and this is my first thread so i may have posted it in the wrong room so please bear with me.

My car has obviously been left in the sun for a while and not garaged all its life as some areas of the roof and rear wings at the top are a slightly lighter shade.

Ive seen lots of yellow cars like this (not just leons) but its really annoying me.

Does anyone have any solution for this?

the lacquer peel is what i was told to look out for when i go to see the LCR i'm swapping my golf for

and i was told not to really worry about the paint fade cos it happens with all the ovni coloured cars, just to get the car in for a good machine polish to bring it back up to almost near its best, otherwise it'll be a trip to the spray shop me thinks

In my case the paint is not the issue, its the lacquer the paint is as bright as new under the lacquer the lacquer has gone milky so it makes it look like the paint had faded, if i could get the lacquer off, the car would be the same colour, this can be clearly seen in the areas the lacquer has peeled.

hands up how many people have parked their car in the same place facing the same direction for the last few years ??

and some people still wonder why they get a cloudy car on one side

Vrrrrroooooooom.... Toosh
my boot has faded too, rest of car is fine....
Strange.
Anywhoo, anyone know whether its cheaper to get the car resprayed the same color? or if i was to change the color. Reason i say is that some horrible little sh**s have keyed my baby all over and the wife is saying she doesnt like the yellow much anyways.
Shame i love the ovni :=)

Any idea's on costs?
Cheers

I understand the probs with this colour as my old car suffered the same problems, my query is though how can buffing or polishing a lacquer which sits on top of the basecoat actually benefit the paint work due to the paint sitting under the lacquer? (the only thing being buffed is the lacquer isn't it?) thanks 20v roper.

Same colour is cheaper, have, there are quite a few of us wanting to get ours done at the mo, would be good to see if we can all get it done somewhere and get a deal :)

OVNI respray- will it fade as badly again?

If I get a respray in the original colour , will it fade as badly again?

Also, what would be the best way to protect the yellow paint and make it look amazing?

You can't polish the paint as you say only the lacquer will be touched.

If I get a respray in the original colour , will it fade as badly again?

Not if you get a good quality respray done, as i mentioned in my previous post, on my car its not the paint that's faded its the lacquer that's gone milky, making the paint look faded, i had some paint work done in the original colour and some lacquer has peeled of on another area and the paint is the same colour as the new paint, just got to get the rest off now.:cartman:

Also, what would be the best way to protect the yellow paint and make it look amazing?

UV polish.
