Does anyone run without one?

Reason im asking is i think mine is failing.

I know a lot of 1.8t's dont even have one, golfs, passats etc.... So why have we got one on our engines.

I know its to keep coolant circulating after shutdown but i never turn the car off straight away after driving it and always let it cool down as much as i can.

Im sure it wouldn't be a problem running without one - just bridge the two pipes once the pump is removed.

I replaced my pump last month as it was making some horrendous noises & sometimes didn't run.

The cheapest I could get one was from Euro car parts, paid £97 iirc - I replaced for peace of mind.

How long do you recommend waiting before shutting down? Reason I ask as my gf's brother used to wait about 2mins after ragging his scoobie and now the turbo has just blown on it giving him a rather expensive repair bill and I don't fancy that.

I normally give mine a good 5min cool down after hard driving and also try to stay off boost for the last 5 mins of the jouney.
Better safe than sorry!

My Secondary water pump makes a hell of a racket (If it engages) if i were to lift bonnet after shut down and it was running and then knock the panel or close bonnet it will make the worst noise ever like it is shaking apart!

What if i remove the powering socket and leave the unit in there? will it cause a major issue?

What makes the secondary water pump kick in? as mine doesnt always stay on after every shutdown.

Thanks!

The reason I ask is I was worried maybe if I left it in place unpowered - maybe there were parts that may block water flow?

Thanks,

Stuart

Some cars (like some Rovers) added these throughout the life of the engine to avoid hot spots in the block (on shutdown) causing very localised boiling of the coolant, which causes gas to form as it boils against the block.. Not sure if that's an issue on the 1.8T but I quite like my water pump as it is :)

Well I had an aum engined golf gti before the cupra and never had any issues and that didn't have the 2nd pump, I'm seriously considering gettin rid of the pump it's just annoying and I always drive steady before turning it off anyway

I run my cupra without the secondary water pump (because it's on it's way out and makes a hell of a racket!). It run's absolutely fine as long as you follow the advice above and let it run/cool down following a 'hard' drive.

The supply for the pump is fed on the same circuit as the fan control relay unit so it is best to disconnect it directly at the pump otherwise your radiator/air con fans will not kick in and you run the risk of boiling the engine which could lead to a blown head gasket! be warned!
