Winter tyres

Did you see this offer earlier in the thread. Looks like good value compared to buying alloys and tyres separately I reckon (if your car can use 16" alloys of course). :)

Will these 16" alloys fit an 07 Leon FR or do the brakes get in the way?
Currently on 18" with standard brakes.....

If they do..... I wonder which tyre option to choose on the deal...

A lot of the winter tyre tests I have read seem to be in very cold/snowy countries - which is not really typical of the UK.

I have 16" steel wheels that just cleared the brakes on my FR. I'd imagine that the 16" alloys would be OK but not sure how you'd confirm without asking.

I'm biased towards the Michelins as I have Primacy Alpin PA3s and they're excellent in dry and wet cold conditions as well as snow and ice. Any of them will be way better than any summer tyre in colder winter temps though. :) The Vredestein Snowtracs are probably a bit more snow biased.

I've just taken delivery of my new winter tyres. I went for Pirelli Sottozero Series II's.

They came 3rd in a performance winter tyre test on the tyre reviews website so i'm expecting them to be pretty good in all conditions except maybe heavy snow.

so who put on their winter tyres already? Because with temperatures reaching even 13/14 degrees during a day it certainly is quite warm for winter tyres.... I'm reluctant to put mine on until temp drops to sub 10C on daily basis....

next week mine are going on also, orderd me some michelin pilot alpin pa3's for the standerd rims 225/45/17.
readed that they are very good winter tyres, no running pirelli p-zero's witch is crap in the wet and cold.

My Michelin Primacy Alpin PA3s went on last weekend (17/10). I generally leave/return home in the dark at this time of year and the temperatures I'm driving in are close to the daily minimum on the forecasts. It was -1°C on the MFD this morning but I'm not worried about warmer temps during the day anyway really...
From what I've read, I believe winters only start to show significantly worse performance and/or wear faster than usual if used on proper balmy/summer days when the temps are 20-25°C or higher. In fact, Continental's web site recommeneds using winter tyres all year round in the UK if you can't change every season, because although winter tyres aren't as good as summer tyres in summer, the difference in safety performance (i.e. braking and cornering) is less than the difference between the two types in winter. For instance: you might save 1 car length stopping in dry on summers in summer temps, but you might save 3 car lengths stopping in wet on winters in winter temps... so in other words, winters are less crap in summer than summers are crap in winter.
Obviously the cynics amongst us (me included) might think that Continental would say that, wouldn't they? I mean... winters are definitely going to wear faster in the summer and overall they'd probably sell more tyres. But my personal experience is that my winters out-perform my summers from as soon as I put them on until I take them off - which suggests either my summers are crap or I've been putting on my winters too late and not leaving them on long enough. For reference, the only summers that I can compare with my winter tyres are Pirelli Pzero Rosso and Pirelli P7. I haven't done a comparison in the summer obviously, but in cool/autumn temps and especially in the wet, the PA3s strongly outperform either Pirelli model for braking and starting off. The Pzeros were more stable cornering at speed though. And I'm not a fast driver so perhaps I'm not appreciating the talents of the summers?

Anyway, I've been reminded how much I like my Michelin winters. :) Compared to the OE Pirelli P7s on my Ecomotive, they're more comfortable, slightly noisier (they're quieter than the Pzeros though) but offer much better braking performance in the wet and on frosty dry mornings like today.

The Michelins are also about 2-3mpg more efficient than the P7s, which is doubly impressive given that the P7s are supposedly a low-rolling-resistance eco tyre (hence why the Ecomotive is supplied with them).

Think I'll wait until temps are consistently over 15°C before swapping back in the spring. :D

I got mine from ebay - used.

sorry but its a bit bollocks saying about not knowing tyre history - do you know tyre history, or in fact, car history when buying used? or do you just buy new cars. This even applies to everything you buy...

as for the question. Just find once that haven't been punctured/repaired and for 1 winter they'll be just fine.

Your choice - when all that's between nearly a ton and a half of car and the tarmac is four small bits of rubber I want the best on there - I won't buy cheap and I won't buy used.

If I buy a used car it's only from a main dealer with full manufacturer's service history, a warranty and a full inspection.

Any used car gets new tyres as soon as possible.

As an aside, most used winters on ebay are sold from Germany with 4mm or less tread remaining - this is the point when it's recommended that winter tyres are replaced as they can't do their job properly anymore

I agree with everything you've said there apart from buying a used car from a dealer. Why would you pay the premium just cause it's from a dealer (unless you've managed to find a bargain or good price).

For me it's the fall-back of a main dealer warranty - the slight premium you pay is offset by the 1 year warranty from the dealer (plus Audi breakdown assistance for me)

That's fair enough then, as long as you know the inspection/checks they do don't usually get a lot of the problems/issues sorted!

Audi dealers around here are to55ers and wouldn't even urinate on you if you were on fire. The amount of BS I've heard from owners re waranty work beggers belief.

Good product, shite dealership attitude (unless you are really lucky and have a dealership new you that appreciates their customers).

From personal experience the faults are usually picked up by workshop but not authorised by sales who will only pay for serious safety issues, obvious problems and cheap things! And that's if your lucky!
