Mk2 2.0L sport agg engine, won`t start

Hey All,

Needing bit of help with a lad I know`s car.

Its a mk2 Ibiza 2.0L sport 99 on an S with an AGG engine code.

He gave me a bell a few weeks ago saying the car wouldn`t start,
so I went over, checked:

spark- yes

fuel - yes

plenty of juice in the battery, but it just wouldn`t fire, total dead flat not even trying to fire when cranking.

So I left it there, only to get a call the next day to say he`d given it one more go in the morning and it had fired up spot on like nothing was ever wrong.

It then ran for 3 days, after which it just conked out whilst being driven.

I put a crank sensor on it, no joy.

Got a mate to do a diagnostic with vag com. Which brought back an intermittant immobiliser key fault. Bingo I thought thats it.

With the price of immobiliser defeats being quite reasonable now he decided that to avoid any future probs and save spending similar money getting either a new transponder ring and or a couple of keys sorted, he`d get the immob off and be done with it.

Got the ecu immob defeated and the thing is exactly the same as before, I`m trying to arrange my mate to do the vag com thing again, but does anyone have any further suggestions??

Matey is already threatening the fuel can solution and is at the end of his teather, plus the car is now at mine taking up valuable space..........

Ok, so this is still going on, unfortunately after a second vag com diagnostic, the ecu was confirmed as still having an immobiliser in play. At this point the lad sent it back to the company who were supposed to have done the immob defeat. Sadly he did not send it with tracking or signed for.........
Guess what the company swear blind it never arrived!!

So as it stands now it has fuel and spark, but won`t fire at all. previously with the original ecu it would fire up and cut out after a few seconds.

I have got hold of an ecu from an agg mk3 golf, not sure if this is suitable, but it plugs in fine?

Have changed the transponder ring for another from a known to be working car.

Had my mate with the vag com sync the new ecu to the existing key and transponder box.

Still no joy, and my mates vag com started playing up so we couldn`t do any further checks after fitting the replacement transponder ring.

Does anyone have any tips, or any info as to whether the mk3 golf agg ecu is ok to use.

had a similar problem you need to get an ecu and igntion key off the same car as the key has a small chip inside it if you open the key you will see it

basiclly this talks to the ecu via the transponder so unless it matches the ecu the car wont go or it will fire but die almost straight away you can keep the same key and locks but u need the chip and the ecu to match or it wont start i think flapper showed me a diagram i will ask him to post it

Yeah I know, the key, transponder box and ecu have to be matched, but you can sync any ecu to a matching key and transponder box, which we have done with vag com, but it stll won`t run........

Theres always the possibility that device inside the car that reads the chip in the key is faulty.

I'd get it off to an auto electrician, there are even mobile ones and they're not overly expensive. If your sure its an immoniliser issue then this is the route i'd take. The immobiliser should for the first time let the engine run for a second or two, after that it shouldnt run at all.

Yes and that has been changed

Have had it vag com`d immob prevented engine start

Had ecu supposedly de immobilised, wouldn`t run

Vag com`d again immob prevented engine start although it would start and then cut after a few secs.

Ecu returned to people who were supposed to have defeated the immob, ecu goes missing.

Tried ecu from mk3 golf 8v gti agg code, no start, not even the fews secs then cut.

Vag com`d immob prevented engine start

Changed the transponder loop, also known as the ariel - its the bit that sends the signal from the key to the transponder box which then tells the ecu if its ok to allow the engine to stay running or not.

Still no go, but at this point the vag com cable started to play up.
Replaced

The main thing I would like to know is if anyone has successfully used the golf gti agg engine coded ecu on a ibiza gti with an agg, or if it just won`t work.

At least then I will know if there are other problems to be idientified and fixed.

i had a similar problem, which was all down to a bad earth wire from the battery terminal (wiping memory off the transponder) but at 1st the garage (a specialist electrical garage for ECU's) couldn't find the cause!

they said i needed a transponder, immobiliser unit and ECU off the SAME car, otherwise it won't work (as the syncing you said won't work all the time) i tracked one down, but they found the cause, bought some stupidly priced software, and fixed it :)

(it was a garage called VRS Motors in Coventry, it's near AP Racing)

might sound dumb, but have you change the coil pack? some vagcom's have messed up in the past (not just for vag's, but other makes at the garage i used to work at)?

Was yours firing then cutting out - as per normal immo prob?

Mine won't start at all. Won't fire, splutter or cough. It has a spark. I've replaced the fuel pump relay, it wasn't that.....

Try ecu relay, no. 30 iirc, coil and then the crank position sensor.

do you have a constant fast spark when your trying to turn it over? if not i'd go with crank position sensor. car parts shop sell bosch 1s for under £30
