Yay!... finished putting the TIP together, looks a bit different from the original one I made...

...and now...
20100928_IMAG0352.jpg

Done all the rest of the little jobs and turned her over with the injectors unplugged to get everything lubed up before firing her up for the first time...

Pretty much fired first turn of the key, had a bit of a cough then settled to fast idle warm up, dropped out of warm up and I was waiting to see if the much discussed R32 throttle body erratic idle would appear and..... steady as a rock at 880 rpm...

...and as you can see here, the needle doesn't faulter... water temp at 90 etc...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rkr1Y7s3Fqo

All good... can't tell you how happy I am... even a small seep from one of the water pipes didn't phase me... bit of work left to do like re welding the water pipe union.... we did pressure test the thing but heat and G12 always seems to find a way out!!!

Night off tomorrow as I am shattered recovering from a busy few weeks and a couple of days of man flu...

Thursday I will be bleeding the clutch and taking her for a test drive so that I can tell Speedy Steve how good/bad/indifferent the clutch is :)

The girl is home!!!!

Bled the clutch after work and the pedal is light as a feather... that maybe more down to the fact my little Mk2 Golf has a cable clutch and is much stiffer than the S3's anyway...

Checked for fault codes before I drove her out of the unit and got...
17748/P1340/004928 - Camshaft Position Sensor (G40) / Engine Speed Sensor (G28): Incor. Correlation

Bugger!!... would appear that despite me checking a billion times I have managed to slip a tooth fitting the belt... Its not the timing chain, I am damn sure of that... I checked it loads of times and span the cams round a few times to settle it all in... that was timed up fine... must have been when I was struggling with the belt over the back of the cam sprocket... ah well... will sort that out over the weekend, just have to lay off the boost...

All I can say is she drives like a dream... the clutch is light and so far judder free, I haven't tested it 'properly' yet as I still need to sort the belt out and a couple of other things... looking good so far on drivability for the clutch, once I am happy the engine is running right then I will 'test' it a little more ;P

One thing I have noticed is how much more responsive the boost gauge is and the DV.... while pottering at -0.5bar, a slight touch of the throttle and the needle just appears at 0.0 rather than moves there.... the couple of times boost has hit the 1bar region just letting off the throttle drops the needle into vacuum quicker than you can blink... before it would tail off... sure sign that the engine is breathing much better...

Not going to get her on the dyno until I have sorted the belt, water leak and the hose (finally!!) turns up from SFS... yes... SFS STILL haven't delivered my hose despite assurances that it would be Thursday at the latest.... 16 days... to make a hose... brilliant!!

So, finally sorted the water pipe.... found out what the rattle in the exhaust was as well... bloody cat had done one, shrunk and turned around in the casing practically blocking the exhaust... brilliant...

...so, that was beaten and cut and drilled until it was gone!....

Until SFS feel I deserve to receive my hose I have stuck with the blue one for now, made it more secure and I am carrying my 1/4" drive set around with me :)

Drove the car home tonight tentatively as I am not sure what may happen if I get on boost and tbh I would rather that was done in the controlled environment of the dyno than on the road. It is fairly evident that the mapping is now a mile out, off boost the car is as drivable as ever, smooth and cruises at 40mph on CC in 6th with no problems at all...

I have Friday off to get the car ready for ADI, needs a bit of a clean everywhere tbh and won't be mapped in time but so far I am pleased she is running ok off boost...

A few closing shots to give you an idea of how the engine bay looks now the work is more or less done...

Thanks mate, I would like to think I won't have to take you up on that but with SFS's current track record its anyones guess!!!

The blue one I have on there at the moment appears to be holding up ok but I haven't driven he car on boost yet as its obvious the mapping on that side of things needs attention...

The drive to work this morning was perfectly uneventful... removing the CAT has made no noticeable difference to the cruising exhaust note (which is good) and she is driving off boost as sweet as you like...

I'll be at the Audi Sport 'stand' at ADI mate if you want to pop along for a chat :)

Was keeping an eye on the liquid gauge and boost gauge on the way home from work this afternoon and noticed the boost gauge needle pop the wrong side of 2 bar!!!! so, tentative drive home after that!!!

Not at the workshop tonight so decided to take the ball and spring out of the UNOS (as I didn't have a joiner handy) and run off actuator pressure... took the car up the road and give her a blast in second gear firstly with Liquid displaying AFR which looked fine and then air flow... second gear to about 6.5k hit a max of 256gs at 0.7bar (10psi roughly) so was pleased with that... and I have a nice pop for the exhaust on gear change :D

Called SFS to check they had made and sent out my hose... they said they had... will be delivered to work AM Thursday... its alleged...

Anyhoo, happy the engine is running happier than before... still not going to give it death yet but at least she is running now without incident and from the look of the airflow on such low boost she is showing promise for so reasonable figures...

Used the Liquid gauge to monitor BHP on the way to work this morning... again I cannot comment on accuracy here as tbh I haven't done a before and after but I am still only running actuator pressure (on mine about 0.7/0.8 bar or 10/11psi in old money) and while there is noticeably less torque there is a definite pick-up of 'urgency' once above 5.5k so the extra breathing afforded by the large port head and all the other mods appear to be paying off... as you would expect :)

I took a pic of this mornings peak reading...
IMAG0377.jpg

To put this into context.... I have had recent Liquid readings (prior to the large port/turbine etc upgrades) of 350/360bhp when running at 1.7bar dropping down to 340 ish (can't remember the exact figures) when I dropped the boost down to 1.5bar which is fairly consistent with the 347bhp I got running high boost and 335bhp running 1.5bar on Bill's dyno prior to this batch of mods...

This is still largely speculative of course and can only be corroborated by running the car on the dyno but I must say I am pretty pleased at how things have turned out so far and that things are on track for some decent power from my setup...
