Nice progress, love this car!

Collets are little buggers mind, always find using a long thin flatnose screwdriver and some grease to stick them to it with makes things a tad easier

I found it easier to 'pre-load' them on the inlets as its such a small area to work in... the collets (with a little assistance) generally dropped down when I compressed the spring and caught the groove nicely on the way back up.... don't know if this would be different on triple groove though... mine are single...

the sachs clutch set up i suggested works very well but is literally on/off so will catch you out at 1st.will take a few miles to get used to it but after that it's fine.i've just had it fitted myself but opted for the sachs pressure plate this time as i'm running 450ftlbs torque with nitrous.if that worries you mate then swap the drive plate for an organic one

The PD kit is here and the 1.8T kit with single mass lightened fly wheel is here. They aint cheap but I can vouch for it on 310lbft and it never having slipped in 15k miles and as the Mrs uses the car as her supermarket trolley/school bus without moaning I'd say its pretty civilised! I didn't go for the fly-wheel purely because I didn't want the extra rattle that would occur with the diesel engine. If it were petrol I reckon I would have had the fly-wheel.

A quote on the PD kit from Jabba's web page :-

The Sachs clutch kit helps take advantage of any performance upgrades made to your TDI. The factory clutch limits are reached by a remap and have peak torque of only 310 lbft. This kit is used with our PD Turbo Kits because of its ability to handle the increased torque of up to 410lbft.

The PD kit uses the same clutch components as the 1.8T kit in this application.


As Caney says though, the paddle plate would be more civilised if the material was organic but I reckon it will wear fairly quickly relative to the round plate.

I plan to give it a go mate, I have an OEM plate if its too bad to tide me over until I can find something... I just would like something that will survive the odd launch without having to change it every 5 mins....

My current (std) clutch holds fine when rolling but I wouldn't want to do any more launches with it (I don't side step launch either)..

Out of interest, do you have any recommendations for an organic plate that would survive a little bit of abuse?

spoke to sachs today about the set up being very snappy and they advised a 2-3week bedding in period to allow the materials to get enough heat in them.i've never done this before and literally hammer them from the word go lol going to do it this time though.as regards to the organic plate i think it's more driver friendly but know of people complaining of strange smells coming from the organic plate:confused:

I think its because the organic plates are made from lentil eating hippies mate... bound to smell a bit ;P

Managed to get my car on the dyno today for a bit of a play with boost and to see if I can get a baseline figure ready to see the relative increase the next rounds of mods will make...

I learned quite a bit today, less is more and previous dyno runs have been on happy dyno's....

I first wound the MBC to its lowest setting with the stronger spring which turned out to be 1.3bar and Bill did a couple of runs to get things warmed up and try and get the tyres grippy enough to stop wheelspin on the dyno...

With 1.3bar I was getting around the 328bhp mark... this was repeatable which is a good thing as previous attempts have been erractic at best so I turned up the MBC... added three whole turns which turned out to be a tad much as the gauge went off scale at over 2bar!! didn't produce much power from that either considering with timing pull in the 9's and the engine getting all hot and bothered... so turned it back down and was getting 1.8bar...

Here is a pic of the results of a few of the second batch of runs...

Not sure of the boost I was running in them exactly as I was turning it down between each run to see where power would settle.... the first one I think was when I was running around 1.4bar... Run 4 was a non repeatable one done after allowing the car to cool down a bit and spraying the FMIC with water etc... not sure of the boost on that one but timing pull was bonkers so the boost was backed off again... run 6 was at 1.5/1.6 where its now set....

One thing that did make quite a difference was resetting the ECU adaptions (fuel trims)... here is a before and after comparison... before in red and after in orange..

As you can see I gain power and torque above 5k rpm but it still flattens out soon after... this suggests the fuelling needs a bit of tweaking in the map and I suspect if it was in its current configuration then I should get a bit more power out of it but not going to worry about until I have the large port head fitted as the map will need sorting anyway...

So, bit more work to do it would appear but at least I have something to work with... with the map tweaked to suit I would imagine I could find another 15 or so more horsepower, I reckon we could get around 350bhp or more with a bit of map tweaking but tbh its not worth it atm as I am only a month away from starting the next round of mods

I have pretty much reached the limit of the std components now I think with airflow getting bottle necked by the FMIC, throttle body and std small port head... roll on the next round :)

Whats next on the list?
Have your plans for the cars use changed to to a more track based set up?

if you're only aiming for circa 350bhp couldn't you of got that with a gt28rs? you would of got more torque and quicker spool for sure?i used to hit peak torque at 4200rpm with the ihivf34 and get 350ftlbs torque.your turbo seems quite laggy for the gains your getting?

I would like 400bhp mate tbh but I am working with a budget and within the capabilities of the standard components... the power is down anyway as I reverted to a previous map when I discovered the airleaks after the initial mapping... fuelling went to **** and the car was undrivable so back to a known working one and all good but not optimised...

The choice of turbo was more to do with having power potential in reserve as I build/add to the engine. The turbo itself may not perform as well as a full on top mountable externally gated GT3071r plus it was one Bill had in stock so I thought what the hell...

Next round of mods will realise a bit more power plus map tweakage will sort the other issues out... with the trims reset the car is so much more drivable and responsive lower down so the map is definitely not at its best yet... more to come as my build is evolving...

I have already spent more and gone further than I originally intended but then you do don't you :)

I was never out for ultimate power and happy with the way it delivers it plus it gives me an excuse to add to it... at some point I will reach a limit of what I can do with the setup I have without spending out on going top mount and building for power rather than building for an oem looking beemer beater :)

Not planning on building a track car tbh... WMI and a SEM inlet mani is pretty much it I think... other than changing the exhaust mani for a tubular top mount and going GT35 there isn't much more I can do with what I have...

I like the fact my underbonnet look is still OEM so won't be doing much other than looking at ways to improve reliability if needed etc...

I am not after numbers just a std looking car with power in reserve which I have...

If I want more power I would prob look to sell the S3 get an R32 and fit a GT35 to that...
