Basically i have just purchased this:

Ebay Item Id: 370228816502

Which allows me to connect an AUX lead into my 2003 ALANA Stereo which HAS the CD6 button, now i managed to dig up an old thread about this, and it says i have to earth pin 14 on the rear of the stereo.. Now the blue connector has an empty space where 14 pin sits, so would it just be a case of feeding a wire down their, so that its touching pin 14 and then mount the other end on the rear of the stereo as an earth point?

Any help is welcome, il get some photos up after ive done it to help others who would like to do the same..

Thanks in advance
Jack

Yeah this is the most basic way of doing it.
The other ways would be to carefully solder onto the pin and then slide the connector over the top of the wire or get hold of the proper terminal, crimp some wire onto it and fit it into cavity 14.
I should know better being an auto electrician but I just opted for the easy option and just pushed a bit of wire down into the cavity, not too hard though as stray strands could bridge it to other pins

Sounds easy enough, is there a technical name for the connector? So i can possibly buy one on the bay, or pop into my local Halfords or Audio shop and ask for one?

And it doesn't have to be any specific wire? Just some general insulated piece which is small enough to feed down the cavity?

Try taking the plug down to maplin or cpc - i'm sure i read on one forum that they have the connectors that fit in to the plug.

Proper way to do it and makes the plug look OEM and secure.

I fitted the proper crimp into it from an old bit of wiring I found in my dad's box o' crap (i believe it was part of the main wiring loom from a rover) so you could potentially get one from the scrappies?

Looks much more tidy and I think in the long run its a lot more reliable - I've not had a single problem with mine in 10 months so far!

Cheers guys for all your advice! Worked like a dream, stuck a bit of wire down pin 14 hole, attached it to the metal on the top of the unit with a bit of Selotape (So it can be removed if needed) and away you go! Sound is nice and loud, and quality is good! If anyone would like some basic photos or extra info, just comment! But for 9.95 delivered, this is clearly the best way to give that stereo a new lease of life!

If you wind your earthing wire around the locating screw on the back of the HU, it can be secured by the rubber bung that covers the screw - looks far more tidy in my opinion. ButI'm glad it worked for you - it is certainly a much cheaper way of getting mp3 connectivity!

All i did was use some earthing wire, stick one end into 14 (wedged it in but wont say what with :p) and then screw the other end round a screw on the headunit.

I have got the same problem! A mate bought it at the same time as me, he wired it all up and it worked straight away, mine won't. Is it something to do with a newer headunit, as mine has different settings to his. I have an Ibiza 2003 where he has a 2005.
Thanks Zac

Bump...

Any more new on this peeps?

I have an 06 cupra tdi with the smart cable and cd6 button.. I've tried just pushing the wire down in to pin14 through the plug cavity and I even soldered the damm thing direct to the pin and still nothing.

It has worked once (I got the 00:00:00 read out) whilst I was testing but after securing everything it was having none of it.

Tried to earth against the rubber bung and on the back of the HU.

Ideas welcome... (Cable thickness possibly?)

mine was doing that initially, not responding when hitting the cd6 button, I thought I had done something wrong. What solved it for me was just cleaning all the connectors, making doubley sure everything was connected and reconnecting and then it suddenly started to work, been working without issue for 3 years now.

Thanks slicecbr,

Thats given me the motivation I needed to have another go at it... Will clean all of the connectors and try again...

Any particular grade of wire you used?

Cheers

Thanks again mate...

Bad earth seems like what Im up against... I have only tried earthing against the rubber bung and casing so far... not the screw like you have... seems more secure...gonna give that a try tonight with proper crimps.

Thanks.

Fixed!!!!!!!!

It WAS a bad earth after all... cleaned the contact points last night, resoldered the earth wire to pin 14 and then around the rubber aligining bung and it works perfectly.

Saves spending £70+ on a new HU! :D

Thanks for all the help chaps...

Good news!

I hadn't given it much thought before but plugged the misses iphone into it last night to listen to some music whilst on a drive and when it rang the music dimmed and when I answered I could hear them through the speakers and they could hear me perfectly when the iphone was in the slot above the radio, I need to get me a smart phone! :D
