you sure it isn't the 17" wheels? the 1.4 8v hasn't got much power as it is, then with 17" wheels you are adding gearing to the car?

Ive got 16's on my 1.4 8v and its lowered and I dont have any problems. Still on the gearbox it left the factory with and no signs of crunching/whining etc.

It definetely could be the 17's that are an issue.

yeah i gotta say i'm not taking the pee outta the 1.4 8v firstly, sounded like i was!

just saying that the bigger the wheel, more power/torque it needs to overcome the turning moment, so could be putting stress on the gerbox!

that a bloody gd idea , well i gotta fix it so ill chuck the wheels and run the steelies and see wot happens cheers for the comments and if u think of anything else please let me now

Yep I know that you werent taking the pee mate. I understand what your saying. My mate had an S-reg 1.4 Golf and put 18's on it, took abit 2get it moving from stationary.
