This thread contains information on OBD Diagnostic cables for the Canbus series of VAG Vehicles.

This thread and it's content consists of general chat about the usage of such cables and similar ones available on the market.

I wouldn't be confident using a non genuine cable.
A proper Ross Tech Micro CAN cable will be around £200 new. This can only be used on Mk5 Golf platform VAG cars.
A Ross Tech HEX CAN cable is around £260. This will work with all VAG models.

WOW! £260! how much is the software for the laptop on top of that? Sounds expensive for just a cable!

As I understand it, the cable works as a dongle for the software - the software is free to download but you need a genuine cable for it to work.

If you can live with only being able to work on mk5 golf platform (leon mk2 inc) and newer then you can just get the micro can cable at around £200!!

Be aware it wont do half what the real cable can. If you pay peanuts for this, you will get monkeys.

A £25 generic fault finder will read and clear faults. I believe some of the cheap ebay kits will allow some logging, but I know they are fairly limited in their capacity.

Last time I looked, someone was selling a genuine VAGCOM cable on here. I would definitely go with the genuine kit.

What about adjustments for example getting the chirp to come on when you unlock and things?

myself and Sean Corky bought a China Special VCDS Cable and it works perfectly and performs all that 811.2 can do

Cost around £40-50 IIRC i carnt remember the link tho so maybe Sean can help

Very similar to mine, mine runs on VCDS 812.4 and works fine
