haha maybe, but I'm not going to try the cambelt and waterpump myself! I've heard the fuel filter is a bitch too. I'd also like to point out that we spent over £200 on parts (at trade price). I know that it was done properly, he was so scared of messing anything up he even removed the intercooler pipework to do the oil filter! I know you might think I'm a mug, but at least I didn't take it to a stealer!

Thanks mate, yeah the grille should be fun!

Note to Dan - i will be getting my hands dirty with the grille since i know the car will still run if I :censored: it up!

Martin even by AmD's prices that is still expensive

I know, that's what i was saying.

Hindsight is 20/20 - If I'd have gone somewhere like AmD their labour would have been three times as much but the job would have only taken a fraction of the time that it took my mate Bob and his lot. To be fair if I was a punter he said he would have charged waaay more as it took them fugging ages.

I think some of the quotes people have been getting on here are about half of what I ended up paying, but I'm not sure they got all of the same things done, I trust Bob and I know he did it all painstakingly properly, so I'm grudgingly happy at the end of the day if a bit skint.

If you look at AmD's hourly rates they are really expensive, but they don't take as long to do it.

Too late now anyway, I didn't know what he would charge until it was done. Still though if you look at the list there are a few things on there that would cost extra for AmD to do like the gearbox oil and the rollers etc. - although I have heard that you don't have to change the gear oil, but it's nice to know it's been done.

The point is that I know and trust him and he took his time and did it right so I ended up paying for it. Not that I'm happy about it of course!

Hey dude, this popped up in general chat but I thought it may be the answer to your rim tape woes.

http://www.alloygator.co.uk/home.asp

How are you getting on with the Falkens on the front Vs the Vreds?

Gators look to be a good find, but wow £40 eh?

Annoys me that it doesnt say what they're made of or how they stick or anything about how to fit them or how "one size fits all up to 21" actually works. Do they get scuffed?

I like my £4 rim tape tbh :) I've had a scuff or two and I just put a dab of paint on the wheel and bung some more tape over it. You can't even tell it's happened. I think that because it was so cold when I put the new bits on before the RR day they didn't stick and it ended up looking a bit ghetto, but they look fine now. Certainly no "woes" hehe

The Falkens are doing very well, I'm quite happy with them. If I'd have got them before the Vreddies then I'd be banging on about how great they are, but after the Ultrac Sessantas everything else is a bit of a let down ;)

Martin, you should always get a set price for things like this and if the garage does need to spend more time they should always ring you and inform you of possible extra costs.

To be fair he did ring me, but I can't exactly say no just leave it in pieces and I'll have the RAC come and tow it back to mine. If it takes longer than expected then so be it. At least he's not charging £60 an hour - every single time I've gone to AmD there has been something that has needed fixing after I've got it back. For the record that is three times so far. I'm not saying they're rubbish - far from it - but they do tend to rush things from what I've seen.

Alot of the big tuners are the same, I guess that there becomes a point where they are just a business, a job's a job and they're eager to get things in and out as quickly as poss to maximise profit. The most important thing is that you have confidence in your mechanic, and if it ends up costing a little more for peace of mind then it's worth it.

Thanks JamJay, I'm glad you get it! Been trying to say that for two pages :cartman:

By the way I answered my own questions about the alloy gator thingy by watching their videos, although I still don't know what it's made of (reckon its just tough plastic). Looks pretty good actually, must admit to being tempted but I imagine I'll refurb them first, no sense in spending money protecting scuffed wheels with cracking paint and cruddy lacquer!

The protectors will look pretty shocking after a good arguement with a kerb I imagine. I wonder if you destroy one, if you could get a single replacement (shorter length) or if they wack you for £40 again? If that's the case then you may as well pay £50 to refurb, unless you want about 200ft of spare plastic knocking around :D.

Time to sell up?

Well I've been in discussion with myself all weekend about selling the car. I should really get a mortgage instead. Anyone who has ever seen this car knows how well it's been cared for and what condition it's in and I am mortified to have to take the plunge. With brand new DS2500s, new tyres, new cambelt, water pump etc it really is a steal.

I will be removing the intake, carbon engine cover and LED rear lights, and putting it up in the for sale section this morning.

I have really enjoyed owning it and want to thank everyone on the forum for your support and advice.

Wish me luck.
