New Leon - Navigation Data on SD Card???

Orothon

Guest
Hi Guys,

I've just collected my new Leon FR and it has the SatNav built in (sorry...don't know the model).

I was told that rather than having to have the CD with the navigation maps in the cd player all the time it would be possible to load them onto an SD card and run them off that. I have transferred the contents of the disc onto an SD card but this does not seem to work (Just a message saying no navigation data found). Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?

Thanks

It sounds like you have the RNS 310.
If you just copied the cd to the memory card I dont think it works that way.
You need to put the cd in the Head unit with the sd card.
Full instructions are on page 50 of the Seat Media System 2.0 owners manual.

I got the unit but because I picked up the car yesterday they had not received the disk because of the postal strike (comes via post not with car).

Nav data on SD card - RNS 310

Hi, saw your post concerning writing Nav data to SD card. Got my new Leon a couple of weeks ago. Tried writing to (various) SD cards through the unit. Would progress and write some data then pop up a "CD Error" message. Got a new CD from the dealer - same problem. Did you ever succeed in writing to SD card? I wondered if it had to be a SDHC card which I have not tried yet ...

Hi, mine installed no problem. It does take nearly 1 hour to install. I use a 8 gigg micro SDHC. What capacity of cards have you tried? UK maps need about 1 gigg but the weston europe maps need about 4 gigg. On my 8 gigg I have around 70 albums has well an the sat nav has no probs. The unit should support both SD and SDHC cards according to the book. If its not the Capacity of the card it seems like the unit could have a fault.

I have tried various card, but the biggest was a 2G Ultra SD. I only have the UK Maps CD so I would be suprised if it needed bigger. I guess the data could be compressed? Whatever I will get an 8G SDHC cars as you have to see if that does the trick. Thanks very much for your help.

2 gigg should be big enough for the UK maps, especialy if nothing else is on the card. After install they take up less than a gigg. One thing the card needs to be formatted FAT 32. I got my 8 giggfrom Ebay for a tenner.

Did you ever manage to get it to install on an SD card?

Just got a 2009 facelift Leon myself with the media system 2 and I am experiencing exactly the same issue trying to get the UK map CD to load on an SD card.

I have tried a number of different SD cards of varying sizes and brands all with the same result. The copy procedure seems to run OK for about 20 minutes and some data is copied to the SD and then it comes up with the error. The nav system works fine from the CD.

There is some data on the SD card as I can see it on the PC. When I view the card in the car it also says that I have some regions installed like France and Belgium but not UK.

I phoned my dealer today about this and spoke to 3 different service related people, none of whoom had actually undertaken the copying procedure, so were not very helpfull. They suggested that I take the car in and let them have a go at it. I suppose if I do take it in they will be able to contact the necessary department to get it sorted.

There does seem to be weird issues with the install process on the RNS310. The maps on my disc installed with no problems, I went for an 8GB SDHC card so I have the option to stick some music on there if I want. This was the one that I ordered and worked 100%:

One interesting thing is that the install will pick up where it left off if you turn off the electrics, mine installed over a couple seperate journeys, so you dont have to sit in the car watching it install...

Maybe its the size of the card that's a problem. The largest card I tried was a 4GB Sandisk Ultra II which is a HC card. I will get an 8 GB card today and give it a try.

Was it the UK / NI 2009 disc that you installed from?

Had a look today and its the 2009 UK/NI map disc that I have.

The problem could be the size of the card, maybe it tries to reserve space in case you *might* want to add the full european maps in the future, or something equally stupid?

Thanks for taking the time to look at your CD. Today I got myself an 8GB PNY SDHC card and still had no luck.

All I can think now is that my head unit and perhaps those of others with this issue has a different firmware version to those without the problem.

On every attempt it goes through all the right motions with progress bar and all and after about 20 minutes it comes up with the message "Checking data. Route guidance or destination input stopped". After this it then comes up with the message "Error Installing. Please check CD and restart the installation".

On each occasion I end up with 104 MB of data on the card. If I use the card status function on the head unit it shows that I have France, Belgium and a few other countries on there which I suppose are just the major roads. The head unit works fine but the map screen just shows blank and any searches just come up with a message that data cannot be found.

I have spoken to 3 different dealers "technical people" about this and none of them seem to even know that this feature exists, let alone what the problem could be. One of them suggested that I phone a VW dealer as they would be more likely to know the solution.

Reluctantly I have booked the car into a dealer for next week, where with the help of Seat UK's technical people they have promised they will get to the bottom of it.

Did they manage to sort it. I have ordered a 16GB SDHC card from ebay still waiting for it to arrive but would like to put the disc onto the card

Just some info for you people looking to transfer nav data to sd.

You can use a micro sd card using an adapter - works a treat

I would take the card to the dealer and ask them to transfer the data on one of thier sat navs. if it works fine on yours copy that data to your pc direct from the card so you can copy it back in future.

I have been working away from home recently, but I did find time last week and booked the car into my local dealer after attempting to explain the problem over the phone.

To be honest, the chap assigned to the task was clueless. Not his fault I suppose, but he didn't even know that the data could be copied to an SD card. Incidentally this is exactly the same response I had when speaking to other dealers "technical departments" about this issue. I phoned 4 dealers, just in case one may be more clued up than another. Alas, they were all as bad as each other.

I took along 4 different cards. A 2, 4 and 8 MB SD and a 2 GB micro SD with adapter. I went through the motions in the car with the chap and just happened to select the 8 MB card that I took to demonstrate the exact problem.

The procedure ran for about 20 minutes and then came up with an error as before, so he took the car into the workshop, plugged it in to get its sofware versions etc and send a support request off to Seat.

I was told that Seat could take up to 48 hours to reply so he would phone me with the outcome.

A couple of days later he left a message on my answerphone with Seat's response. "Only a 4 MB SD card can be used for this pupose and you have been using an 8 MB card".

I must say, that I was not surprised at this pathetic response, given their total lack of knowledge. I wonder if we had tried the 4 MB card that I took along (which I had tried before) the response would have been "you can only use 8 MB cards".

Not had time to take it any further as yet, but I will later this week.

To be fair, I'm really not that bothered about it, but the manual clearly states that it can (and should) be done for maximum performance from the system. No where in the manual can I find reference the only using 4 MB cards.

I posted an update above, but the quick answer is NO.

I forgot to mention that I have also tried 2 different genuine CD's without any luck. I am convinced that it is a firmware issue, but I don't know if it is possible to get the firmware version of the head unit without diagnostic equipment.

I would be insterested to know if there is a difference in firmware versions between those that it works on and those that it does not work on.

is there an easy way to check for firmware? ill check mine if you like? i have a 16gb card which works fine (sandisk)

Another thought, have you tried formatting the card via the head unit and not your pc?

I dont think you can do that. According to the manual the when installing to the SD card it will only work on the unit it was installed with.

To say only a 4 Gigg card can be used for this purpose is crap. I use a cheap 8 gigg Micro SD with no problems. Even when installing the Media Centre short down in the middle of the instalation because I had not got the engine running, but has soon has I turned it back on the instalation continued without error.

I'm pretty sure I have tried it all ways, engine running and not, formated in the PC and the car etc... I reckon I have run the procedure at least 20 times with various cards and always the same result.

I have spoken to the dealer today and expressed my concerns with the "Seat Technical" department's comments. They are apparently going to pass on my response to Seat and see what that brings. Perhaps their response will be that you can only use memory cards that are the same colour as the car or something equally ridiculous.

Obvioulsy there are people here that it works OK for and at least one other person that it does not work for, so I suspect it is a firmware issue on some cars.

The stupid thing is that it is really not that much of an issue to me, but if it is a feature that should (and does for some) work, then I would like it to work.

The dealer said they have another (brand new) Leon in the showroom with the media system 2 and they are willing to try my CD and memory cards on that one. Just means another 60 mile round trip.
