Tyre FUBAR'ed - Cause?

Was driving down the motorway earlier when i heard a loud BANG and then started pulling to one side, all ESP, ABS , ECU lights on and a scraping noise coming from the rear.

Obviously i shat myself and pulled into Granada services to fit the space saver (car is now like a tripod).

Whats disturbing is what the tyre was like when i removed it.

That gash goes right round the inside of the tyrewall, only thing holding the outer half onto the inner was an inch of rubber.

What the shuddering hell could have caused this?
Gettin two new tyres the morra but worried in case it does the same again? Theres nothing contacting the tyre in the arch btw.

rear alignment out of whack from damage or a knackered alloy/bearing? any or some other cause suspension wise

looking at the state of the tread (or distinct lack of it - jeez)

what wheels? standard ? not rubbing/close to a rear shock is it ?? gaps can change at speed/temp a little ??

Tread looked ok and passed an MOT last Tuesday, so whatever it is, its happened fast. The other tyre hs plenty of tread all over.

Not rubbing on anything and alloys are the same as standard. Tested by putting some weight in the back.

Could have been a nasty 1 by the looks of it.

Once the tyre deflates its only the side walls that are keeping the wheel from hitting the roads and if your doing 60-70 on the motorway its going to be adding alot of pressure to the side wall which will just give way (as pictured)

Anything could have caused the tyre to deflate. Is there any sign of a puncture around the tyre?

That couldnt of been ok a week ago perhaps a blind man done your mot? There are revised seting for the rear to stop this and feathering of the tyres.

how come you have a space saver as a spare the cupra comes with an alloy as a spare?
you were lucky you were going in a straight line on an motorway and not going round a bend on a A road otherwise it may have been fatal.

Picked up a space saver at the scrappy out the boot of Golf.

MOT was done by a SEAT main dealer, and wasnt done by Stevie Wonder.

The outside of the tyre is still attached btw

sidewall damage, a 'bleb' speed, all contributing factors to that kind of damage.. I did that a couple of years ago on a Vivaro van on two tyres.....scarey is not the word!!

Doubt i must have hit something that gouged it right round. The damge looks like trauma rather than wear.

2 new tyres + geometry check too if i was you and as for trauma i would say lack of thickness due to wear from something

what's the rest of the tread on that tyre like ? may give a clue to what's wrong by it's wear pattern

alloys 'same as' standard as in EXACTLY the same or just same size ??

Tread is pretty equal across the tyre, opened it up there and founb some wooden splinters inside the tyre, might have been a bit of wood i've hit or something.

sounds like a bit of wood played apart in your sidewall splitting open then.
them tyres didnt get stretched on did they?

tread equal ? it's worn out and probably through on the outer edges

looks like a bit of stretch and sustained running at speed and low tyre pressures looks like it didn't help much either considering the wear both sides

Thats pretty bad wear all the way round.
Definatly a MOT Failure, He must not have seen it.

I had a very similar issue when my balancing was out (Only by a fraction) and alignment (only by a fraction) I didn't notice till I saw a thread poking out.

Constant under-inflation on low profile tyres damages the sidewalls as I found out on my last golf (I had 205/40 17). It causes cracking/splitting of the rubber around joins in the rubber - normally on the inside edge which has more load on it under most conditions.

From the way the tread is worn down on BOTH edges I`d say under inflation has weakened the tyres to the point where a blowout was only a matter of time.

Also, stretching is a really dodgy practice.

i think they might just looked streched as the sidewalls are worn or its the nature of the tyre making them looked stretched if you look in the picture with the cat you can just make out 205/40/17.

Hahaha winter slicks by the looks of it, and fook knows how he passed that, bloody hope the rest of the tyres are better if not get new ones!

looks like they havent been inflated properly tbh, cant see how the splinters would have got inside without some obvious way. (may have just got in there from when the tyre went boom)

That thing would never have passed MOT over here! Could have gotten a lot worse if you hadn't have stopped in time!
