Torn between two

I did not want to hijack the thread below as this is a similar question but not quite...

I have done a little searching on this so far but need the experience of owners to settle my mind.

Ok so, I am stuck between buying a cupra R 225 and a tdi 150PD +
I know the main differences like economy and diesel power output etc

However, If I was to purchase some engine upgrades to the diesel would that bring the performance alongside the cupra R? I mean I know people go on about the diesel having more usuable torque from 40-70 etc but it still takes a whole 2 seconds longer to get to 60 compared to the cupra r, that seems like a lot.

Do all cupra fr tdi 150s come with a "PD" engine?

Am I likely to save a considerable amount more by getting a 150? If I will then I would most likely get the diesel but if its not going to be a substantial amount then having the performance of the cupra r would be worth it?

I would also like to mention that I wouldnt be doing more then 5000 miles a year, more likely around the 3000 mark, if that helps anyone.

I would really appreciate your time in replying, as I really am in a dilemma.

Thanks in advance

For the miles that you are doing, Cupra R IMHO.

The money that you would save on diesel with 3000 miles would probably be less than the mods you'd need to do to get 225BHP. Another way of looking at it is you could spend that money and take the Cupra R to 270/280 :D

If you were doing alot of miles, FR+ all the way, but I can't see the justification with less than 60 miles per week

Get the cupra R... you wont see any benifit of a Diesel with that low a mailage!! i have a Cupra, doing 11k a year and its now performing a little over a 225 Cupra R but in the long run has cost me more.

Buy the R and you'll never look back i promise you!!!!

I love my TDI, test drove a Honda S2000 the other day and was disapointed with the performance. Not driven a 225 LCR but with your mileage its probably not worth getting a tdi although the cheap insurance and £125 road tax is nice. I get upto 35mpg if i'm having fun and over 40mpg if i drive normally.

aint the Dervs fetching more money than the R's if thats a case still , youd offset the tax and insurance for the higher premium for bying the Dervs , when i wanted one over a year a go , the cupra /fr's were like rocking horse **** to find , (good ones with low milage)

LCR all the way... i did have a cupra tdi and was doing around 10k a year and didnt see that much saving at all. Since getting the LCR its a much better car and feels a lot better to drive and it has the WOW factor over the cupra!

Get an R and enjoy driving again. I think i mentioned this on the last thread both are great cars but as i jump between the two on a daily basis the R is so much more of a drivers car - sharper, harder, tighter and importantly free reving! and then with just a map it is in a different league to the tdi unless you really want to go heavily into modifying. As for a diesel they are overpriced you would save tonnes if you bought an equivalent petrol cupra and there is no chance you will make the pump difference up, from the last thing i read on a new car its about 40,000 miles to recoup the initial increased cost against decreased petrol consumption when compared to a petrol model.

well thanks guys, you have helped me make up my mind. Cupra R it is, now to try and find a decent standard one for under £7000...
