missfire in 4th gear only???

hi peeps, i gave the cupra a bit of a run today (after not being able to pull away from my brother in his 106 gti to other day). it revs and pulls well in 2nd and 3rd but then missfires at 5k in 4th. its like hitting the limiter and it wont rev past it. 5th also seems slugish but didn't get the revs that high in 5th as i think thats pushing it a bit on public roads. it may have been like this for a while and i just havent noticed as i dont usually drive round like a loon!

im probally just going to change all the coil packs but thought it was strange it was just doing it in 4th???

also will GSF coils and plugs be ok? ive also heard people using 'bolt down' coils. are these from a different model or something?

sorry for bringing up a familiar problem but all the threads ive searched seem to have a steady missfire in all gears, but mine isn't doing this. im gutted as i have about £100 to spend on a good engine service but now i have to spend it all on coils!!!:(

higher gears, higher loads, and usually higher boost
most likely is coil pack if its a proper misfire

unless its a lean misfire and a failing maf... which may account for the 106 issue

I would only buy coilpacks from a dealer to be honest... Like £5 more for a genuine bit of kit...

You can go to Audi and order S3 coilpacks which have the bolt-down but you have to make sure and ask for the bolt-down as they have push downs as well. Also to make sure your rocker cover has the bolt holes to accommodate...

this is a good option as my mate is an Audi mechanic, so cheap parts!! is it any specific model s3?? older 225 or 210 maybe??

looking at the rocker from the front of the car there is 1 un-used tapped hole(M5 or 6 looks like) on the left of each coil. so looks like there there!

I will try and dig the part number out for you.

There should be 2 holes one at the top left and one at the bottom right of each coil. One bolt securing it down would be enough though.

cheers, that would be good!! if the second hole is closer to the back of the engine maybe i couldn't see it!!

anyone know the price of s3 coils from Audi. i'll be able to get them with staff discount but just want a rough price!!

after changing my plugs and coils, i used genuine s3 non bolt down coils and prf6q plugs(single point ngk one) im still having the same problem.

the car is flat out at 110-120 ish on my private road due to missfire. but it pulls well in all gears up to this speed and the missfire starts in 4th.

the car has also had a service (oil & filter, fuel filter). any other ideas now ive ruled that out???
