Hi,the last week, everytime i have started my car from cold there is a very weird noise that lasts a min until the auto choke kicks off.The way i can explain it is, its like someone putting a bit of plastic into a turning fan and the noise you get off that and very loud.after the choke goes off,it totally stops.I first thought i had plastic or something caught in the belts but when it went after the choke went off,i thought it cant be. Any help would be great as its starting to worry me abit. Its fully serviced and has only had a new service about 200miles ago

Cant remember what the answer was but do a search, someone asked this maybe 3 days ago. Something to do with the engine warming up. Although mine does it but it doesnt sound like how you're describing!

i done a search before writting this.my seems like a totaly different sound to what they were describing.i wouldnt say it sounds like a jet engine at all.it used to tick any ways and still does from the box but this is totally different, much louder, you can even hear it when inside the car with doors closed,it sounds like someone jamming some plastic into the fan going round.cant explain it better than that but it totally goes over the first min.i cant find where its coming from...do you still says its the second air pump??if so where is that?

Check the Mkivs forum they have a very good guide for fixing it. Perhaps yours is damaged?

Basically it is at the lower part of the engine towards the front.

that is where the noise is coming from,so it might be that.have you got the link for that as cant seem to find it.dont even know what the secondary air pump looks like

Bump this back up as I have a noise which I would describe as the same.

My friend who has one had the 'jet engine' noise and this is not it.

It stops as soon as the choke is off, so last for a couple of mins and only at cold start.

Take a look at your secondary air pump at the front underside of your engine. If it has rivets holding it together they have probably split and allowing air to escape. Fix is to remove pump, drill out rivets and replace with bolts

Yep, that's what I'm planning to do this weekend.

Although when removing the 100 relay in an attempt to isolate the pump I'm still getting the noise on cold starts.

Removed the secondary air pump to check it, I changed the rivets to bolts and refitted as it seemed to work as it should and I didn't have a blanking plate to fully removed.

Bad new is I still have this noise!

I was sure it would be the Air Pump as it's only audible when the choke is on, I'm now not sure what it could be. I wonder if the waterpump could be at fault....

Wierd one mate. The air-con compressor is in that area along with the power steering pump. Might be worth taking the aux belt off and spinning the spindles and seeing how the bearings feel on them?? You would think that it wouldn't just be at cold start with something like that, but i guess the bearings may rattle when cold and then quieten down as they get warm???

If the noise coincides directly with the higher revs on start up and stops exactly as the revs drop, then i'd still think that it's more likely that it's related to the secondary air system in some way or other mate.

Maybe film the noise and post it on youtube and link it here? That way someone might be able to help more.

Also one of these may help. You can hold it to the various parts and hear where the noise is coming from. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Automotiv...1451527058?hash=item4883f52792:i:311451527058
