Pre-heating Car.....

Okay... I may be thick but.....

I want to pre-heat my car before setting off to work in the mornings. Now I have 2 sets of keys so I thought I'd start the car, put fans on etc lock it while I get my stuff together. However it won't lock remotely, so if I turn off the internal sensor and lock the door it's okay. Until I drive of then the alarm goes off.

How do I get round this? Thanks!

You should have 1 remote key and one normal key which has a chip inside it to communicate with the dorr locks, ignition etc. Start the car with the remote key and lock the doors with the chip key.

The other alternative is an expensive Clifford Alarm with Telestart.

Ahhh.. okay.. i started with the chip and locked with the remote, so I'll swap it round and try it tomorrow (No doubt!).

It's illegal to leave a car running unnattended... that's why people say turbo timers are illegal? Perhaps this is just on public roads though?

Probably so that it doesn't magically hop into gear and plow into a small child. I guess it's possible these sort of mechanical issues did happen when the law was put in place.

I know this was brought up a lot when discussing turbo timers on the jap forums. I assume it must be the same for the fancy-dan remote start alarms (a guy on my street had one on his astra... thought he was the ticket, I kinda wished he would get fined )

It's pretty bad for your engine to warm it up in this way, its in the manual somewhere.

It is illegal unless its not on a public highway, the offence is called quitting! Also if someone smashed your window and drove off in your car its quite likely your insurance company would not pay out.

Bad for the engine to warm it up by letting it idle? I'd have though thaat driving a car from stone cold would do more damage to be honest.

I wouldn't recommened telestart or a turbo-timer without using a black jack device.

the police cars around here have a button you press which means you can take the key out and it keeps the engine running, however if the clutch or accelerator is pressed, it cuts the engine unless the key is reinserted. Quite clever

Of course LCRs don't need a turbo timer anyway as VAG were clever enough to install the cooling pump that cools the turbo slowly after the engine is switched off! If only that had thought to fit an electrically heated front screen then we wouldn't need to start the car 10 minutes early anyway!

We had the conversation about warming up a few days back because I said that with 4-stroke bikes they tell you that more damage is done leaving them idling than gently driving away, especially on a cold day as the oil may never actually warm up enough to do any good while idling.

During the very same conversation, it was pointed out that most bikes don't have a turbo and have a wet clutch that uses the same engine oil... so it's not exactly the same :S

Without going off-topic... isn't that a myth? It's a secondary water pump that pumps coolant around the engine, it's doesn't do anything for the oil that can potentially coke in the turbo bearings/journals itself does it? I know I always take the last couple of miles of any journey easy/off-boost anyway!

You might be right, but why would VAG feel the need to continue cooling the engine like this?
Like you say, off topic now. Perhaps we need a new thread to get this answered once and for all!

agreed, people miss the point regading turn off with hot turbos, its the oil that gets done and leads to turbo issues.

Also, i can confrirm it is illegal to leave the car running unattended. It may not be policed that actively, and common practice for people to do this. but illegal non the less.

Also i agree regarding wraming car up in tick over, can actually be worse that driving away gently from cold.
