Checked the coolant level this morning cold and it was well below the minimum (on my 07 FR petrol tfsi), went out in it, came back car was at normal operating temperature i slowly released the top of the expansion tank to release the pressure and the level shot to just above the max mark, coolant looks the right colour, the oil is ok, ive never seen this happen before, any ideas ??

If it was well below the min from cold I would be worried if I was you that maybe the head gasket has gone or worse the head is warped like sum on here have had happen to them.Not right anyway.

I had the coolant bottle replaced after I noticed the coolant level was way down. Took it to the dealers where they pressure tested it and told me it was cracked. No problems since then.

Phew.Relief then.As long as that was the prob n they not fobbin u off as sum garages are known 2.

I'll never know if they actually did test it, but they did change it and it's been fine ever since so I'm not bothered really.
I still keep an eye on it just in case though.

I thought the head at first but no head gasket symptoms ie. loads of power and the oil and coolant seem ok, the level has now been topped up and is regulary checked because the warranty runs out in March, checking other forums on cars with same engine notably the GTI one some there have had this but there is no one reason it would seem for it happening, though some have had a leaky hose/flange at the back of the engine.......
