Use the correct grade to top it up with. your going to have to assume that its got the right stuff in already, or get it changed ASAP for peace of mind. Get some 506.01

Yes especially the PD engine that requires certain properties of the oil to lubricate bearings in a certain way.

What oil do I need for a 2003 Cordoba 1.9 SDI? I know it's 5W40, but don't know if it's synthetic oil or semi-synthetic.
Best you can get really. Semi synth would be okay but if you shop carefully you can get full synth for not a lot more. As I recall the correct spec oil is VW502 00 / VW505 00 at 5w 40, but if you want the best then anything above that. Latest spec VW504/507 at 5w 30 would be good. I run that particular oil in the Altea, the Berlingo HDi, and the daughters Toyota Yaris. It's cheaper to buy that in bulk (20 ltrs) than buy separate lesser quality oils for each one.

Thx, I 'v been looking on Ebay and the price difference with the local shops is insane. It's almost 60% cheaper online, including shipping. 
How much oil do I need for 1 change? Is a 5 liter can enough?

5 ltrs is okay and will give you some spare for top ups.

It says its 505.00 grade will this suit a 110bhp Leon 1.9tdi i believe they are a non PD engine?

Yep, that's good for your car. But £8.25 per ltr? I don't pay that for VW504/507 5w 30 branded oil. Way too expensive.

VW504/507 is one oil spec, covering both petrol & diesel.

In North America, after a brief period of enthusiasm for the 506.01 oil about 3 years ago, there is almost no one still using it. Some folks ran used-oil tests and found excessive metal wear with the Elf Evolution 506.01. Others found that the only places that sold it were charging several dollars more. And finally, the 507.00-rated oils seem to be superior to all other VW-spec oils
One of the better options over here is the Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5w30, meeting 507.00. But after the warranty period, some have switched to the slightly more viscous Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5w40, that meets both Daimler and BMW specs. Probably not enough difference to make a difference, but some prefer an oil with a bit more viscosity, even if it doesn't carry any VW or API approvals.

ok, so some negative comments regarding 506.01...i guess using an oil graded higher than 505.01 (5w30) should be good for the PD TDi engines, am i wrong?
