Help! How low can i go without issues?

Hi Guys,

I am new to this forum and have just recently bought a 2001 Toledo tdi 110 SE.

So far i have put a sony xplod sound system, and a parrot bluetooth handsfree into the car. I have also fitted a 6000k HID conversion kit along with 19" old style rs4s.

The car is looking alot better with the 19"s on, but it is far too high. Over here in northern ireland most toledos are lowered around 50 - 60 mm all around. I was just wondering if i will be able to get away with lowering mine that much without any issues other than having to be very careful as the sump is already quite low.

Any help is much appreciated!

Thanks!!!

I believe the recommendation is not to go below 40mm or you will have issues. Should be plenty of threads to search on lowering to confirm.

When I did my oil change on Friday, I got a good look under the car and saw my sump had already got alot of scars on it. And I'm running on standard suspension!!

How much clearance have you got between wheels and arches? Just looking outside at my car now I can't see much more than a 2 inch gap, so I'd go with Kewe's suggestions of 40mm being max.

You could always go for adjustables, then you can change the height as you require?

Also why I am running standard suspension on 18s ;)
Plus I really don't like the low-low look - too boy racer chavtastic.
But then I am an old git :D

I like the low look when it's for something more than just looks. Simply dropping a car for the sake of it seems a bit pointless to me. I believe my Tolly would benefit greatly from a set of uprated dampers, but I wouldn't drop the ride height. My other half already says it sits too low!

And yes, sadly I am also an old git! :D

I think the Toledo benefits from a slight drop from a looks point of view however my undertray hits off the speed bumps by my house as it is (with standard wheels and ride height) so I've kept mine as it is!

Hi again guys,

Have just been speaking to a friend of mine who cleared things up a bit. He drives the same car as me.

He has his toledo lowered 50mm at the front and 60mm at the back with 19" wheels. He has confirmed that there are no problems with this and all he needed was the springs and shocks.

I have ordered the same sprinbgs as him, so i am happy now.

I know the sump is already low, so just have to use some common sense and be careful with speed bumps etc :D

It's the ones that are just lumps in the road that you really need to worry about, rather than the standard 'sleeping policemen'. I frequently get frustrated drivers behind me because I drive over them slowly, and our village is littered with them!

The main thing I hate about them is that buses and lorries don't need to worry about them as they're wide enough, but its the buses and lorries that are doing the silly speeds!!
