Bang lots of smoke limping home...

Been getting a bit of a strange noise at about 2000 revs lately mechanic said it was nothing to worry about, then tonight coming home pulling up a hill hear a bang, some smoke and then the engine just kind of revs up, then loses power, up and loses power, only just got home...Seems like something as blown....

Checked the engine and smoke was coming from about the same place as the noise had been previously.

Worried it's a big one, cam belt and tensioners have just been changed and it's just had a service! Any wisdom?

£10 says it's a boost hose that has popped off. very easy to sort out yourself, you may need a new clip to join the popped off hose or worst case is you need a new boost hose.

Was the noise from near the drivers side headlight by any chance?

Yep that was where the vibration noise has been coming from, and that is where the smoke seemed to be coming out of as well...

Glad to hear it's not something too serious...I thought the engine was done for, seemed serious!

Cheers

definitely seems like a boost pipe ha spopped off, it s a common problem with standard hoses, as said above you can replace it yourself, worse case its a new hose. my turbo has just blown, wish it was a boost pipe instead :( what do you drive?

Confirmed it's the boost pipe and it needs replacing. Just had it serviced and cam belt and tensioners done for 430 quid and came out with the boost pipe making a noise at 2000 revs...Should that have been picked up?

It's a 130bhp tdi sport and it's black...never thought I'd be able to afford a car that sporty and economical!

not really because unfortunately the garage would not have known to check it as you did not mention it, i would give them a ring and explain what happened, see if they are willing to fix it at their cost...if you dont ask you dont get ;)

Thanks for all the help. Got it sorted in the end, the mechanic fixed the pipe at cost for the part to help me out, as he felt a little bad for not spotting the problem in the first place when I told him about it.

Have a new problem though. Seems the previous girl owner smacked the hell out of a kerb and bent the alloy rim, so now I need at least one new alloy. At the car's already old and I'm a part timer any suggestions on a cheap way to acquire a new alloy?

I had same thing happen was the bottom intercooler hose, £90 for a new one :censored: but its better than something ellse blown. as for the alloy youll normaly find split sets of alloys on ebay or try a local breakers.

Exactly the same happened to me ('54 FR 130) after a cam belt change, AA came and recrimped the clip which lasted about a week before it popped off again, took it to Seat and it needed a new bottom pipe, they bodged it on for a few days with electrical ties until the part arrive, cost £90 for the part :( But they did not charge any labour.

Just so as you know, the boost hose in question would have been disconnected in order to access the cam belt. It would have been reconnected again after the cam belt had been replaced. These hoses don't seem to like being tampered with really but needs must when doing a cam belt.
