Brembos Warping

My Brembo disks have just warped, they were only fitted about a year ago as when i bought the car the disks on there at the time were severely warped. Since i have owned the car the Brembos have never felt very good, and even the standard brakes on my mates passat feel ten times better at stopping the car!! I dont understand how the brakes can be so rubbish and yet still warp the disks :(

join the club mate!!!

Are yours crap at braking too mate? Wasn't it you who stripped the calipers down and rebuilt using new seals? Did this not help at all? Been meaning to do this on mine as i thought it may be a sticky piston causing the crap breaking and warping.

brembo's work extremely well. so those who report poor braking must have some serious malfunction going on I think.

Amen to that! My Porsche Brembos put my face on the windscreen when i hit the anchors lol.

I did however have issues when i first fitted them, but all sorted now by changing disks and pads and giving them a good old bleeding.

I havent had my disks warp.....yet lol

Any ideas what this 'malfunction' could be bill? I've pressure bled the system and it made no difference. Like i said though the disks were badly warped when i got the car and the new disks are strting to warp too, even though the braking efficiency is rubbish!!

I know it's a bit of a long shot, but have you had the brake servo vacume hose recall checked with Seat? This may be affecting the effectiveness of your brakes, but im at a loss as to why your disks would be warping.

Have you tried going on a drive using your brakes as little as possible, like down the motorway, and checked to see if your disks are getting excessively hot? If this happens then your pad must be in contact with your disk.

If this is the case, maybe Bill could offer some suggestions?

do they lack bite?
do you have longer pedal travel?

can you describe what they feel like?

mine has been with audi in lincoln for the past 2 days and they have looked round my whole brake system, no leaks or anything bleed them like three times with pressure bleed used loads of fluid and the pedal feels just a little better to when i left it.

pedal feels just as though there is lots of travel before it bites, maybe an inch to an inch and a half then it bites then you can push it say another 1cm then brakes are very good. Why is there so much pedal travel there never used to be!!!!!
Also you can push the brakes once then quickly again then again and feels as though the bitting point moves up so when you press the brakes for a 4th time the pedal only travels 1cm from the top now and brakes very well this is how they should be, its very strange and very frustrating as ive spent xxx amount of money on the brakes and are worse than my std brakes of what i can remember!!!

Hmmm... not sure how to describe it really, ive put up with it for about a year now so kind of used to them. The main thing is it appears to lack bite, i can push on them as hard as i like and it still just gradually slows down the car, even if i stamp on the brakes it doesnt start to lock up enough to make the ABS kick in. When i drove my mates passat (bog standard brakes) a few months ago the brakes felt a lot more 'snappy', it just felt so much easier to press the pedal and apply full brakes in an instant. When i press my pedal it feels like i am in the transition stage between fully on and fully off the whole time, and the harder i press the pedal the better it brakes but never gets any where near the efficiency of the passat.

pumping the pedal and getting a better pedal sounds hydraulic issue to me... m/c an dor air trapped somewhere

long pedal? firm pedal...?

lack of bite could be pads/disks... how long and what are they on there?
removing the pads and abrading them on a flat surface on some 80 grit paper may take their tired front face off to rejuvinate mayeb.. or the pads themselves might lack bit inherantly.

the servo assist feel, may be a vacuum leak to the servo, as thats where the "assist" comes from. worth checking the pipe with pressure and looking for leaks

Thanks for the quick reply Bill :D

I think the pads are EBC greenstuff if i remember correctly, they were on the car when i bought it. When i changed the first set of badly warped disks the pads were worn very unevenly and my mate at the garage sanded them right back for me so they were even again. The freshly sanded pads made a difference at the time but i was still getting the problems i have today. I think im gonna investigate the servo assist route, might order a replacement pipe and valve (where the boost gauge plugs into) and see if this makes any difference. If you have any more ideas/comments please let me know.

Thanks again,

my brembos were warped about half a year ago so had the discs and pads changed at great expense but now they feel like they are warped again. how much does a skim cost?

I paid just over £100 to have mine done.
Was just going to get a new set of discs, but im hoping now these discs have had a few heat cycles through them and been skimmed, they wont warp again... only time will tell I guess.

Haven't updated this for a while.

About 3 weeks after I had the discs skimmed (no harsh braking) they warped again.

Iv made do with them as iv had other things to do on the car.

Im starting again to try and rectify the problem.
This is what im doing:

1 - Replacing wheel hubs & bearings (im thinking if they are damaged or untrue they could be throwing the disc out aswell) This will also allow me to replace the disc location screw as the ones I have at the moment have the screw snapped in the thread.

2 - Sending the Brembos away for a full refurbish, new seals, pistons .etc as I think I may have a stuck piston causing heatspots - alas warping the disc

3 - New discs and pads.. again!

Im slowly buying all the bits, hope to have it done by the start of March.

And if that dosen't sort it, im going to standard brakes!
