i would'nt worry about the bikers, most do a good enough job of killing themselves by riding like tits on the road, so venting won't hurt them.

i loof forward to trying this in my next tdi as never tried it on my old ones

Strange how MOST bike accidents are caused by CAR drivers pulling out on them !!

Let's keep this on topic. It's about venting diesels....

I hate spilled diesel on forecourts, it treads onto car carpets. I'm sure bikers are aware forecourt tarmac is a risk area. :)

I can't see why you bother sticking in another 4litres in the filler neck only to lose it on the road in overflow anyway, after all it's not liek you are only getting 200 miles to a tank and you wouldn't waste fuel carrying around a bag of potatoes so why an overful tank? but you pay's ya money take ya choice etc i guess

as for the odd dribble on the filler neck try checking the overflow pipe underneath to see if that's wet, if it is you are leaking fuel onto the road (see bottom left corner by #14+15)

As far as bikers are concerned, even as one i agree there is an increase of 'idiots' recently so in partial i agree with ya sod em, but it is still a minority thankfully compared to the amount of decent daily riders out there.

Add to the mix the overwhelming increase of diesel users in comparison and more so those hell bent on brimming every drop only to have it spill out the bottom again bemuses me and is indeed putting not just bikers but ALL other roadusers at risk.

After all said and done the roads are bad enough as it is no matter how many wheels without peeing diesel over em

I wonder if SEAT can put any more pipes in there !!!!!

The overflow you are pointing out seems to go across to item 23.

The vent tube opened up when venting the tank goes from the housing for item 10 directly back to the fuel tank and is there to prevent a vacuum being created as the engine uses fuel.

The only time i can see fuel leaking from the overflow pipe is if the fuel expands enough to spill through the pipe linking 8 and 13 - filling item 23 (no idea what this is) - and then finally down pipe 22 to the area around items 14 and 15.

Hmmm, interestingly enough my driveway does appear to be a bit dirtier under the car since I got it (started venting immediately). Maybe it's excess diesel trickling out? I do usually get an extra 10-12L in by venting.

Perhaps worth giving it a miss if I'm just buying diesel to coat my drive with.

as i said check the pipe to see if it is causing any leaks

bear in mind that diagram has been the same for the last 8 years or so and shown on a majority models so it's only a generic picture and not that accurate

If it's not raining next time I fill up, I'll vent it to the top then and stick a tray under the overflow pipe overnight.

hopefully not a drop anywhere to be honest, probably won't sat still anyway but be nice to see if there is an overflow pipe anywhere under there

with 600 miles odd to a tank or whatever it's not like you won't be passing a fuel station at some point surely?

mind you is there any expansion to derv fuel ? and considering the extra weight carried affecting mpg anyway is it really a required 'must do'

i can only guess the differences in a real world situation would be negligble either way be it brimmed or filled twice apart from time and inconvenience wasted having to pull in a fuel station 100 miles early but then how many time would you do that in a lifetime anyway ? :)

mind you i don't brim the top of the kettle to get an extra cup of tea out of it myself either

It's not expansion that concerns me as the car stays in a very narrow range of temperatures. It's more the idea of it 'sloshing' about when cornering and piss*ng out onto the road (from both the hazard and cost perspectives).

Also, if I manage to get another 12L in, it's nearer to 170 extra miles which over the course of a year amounts to saving me an extra twelve journeys to the petrol station.

Each trip to the petrol station results in me buying at least 250g of chocolate or similarly cr*ppy food, which contains 1312 calories that I don't need, giving a total of an extra 15,750 calories over the course of a year.

For every excess 3600 calories, I'll store a pound of body fat, so by venting my tank, I stand to save myself an extra 4lbs of lard around my waist each year, or nearly three stone a decade.

Either that, or I'm just a lazy b*stard who can't be arsed filling up too often.

Pth an extra 10kg, for at most 170 miles. Or about 4 years worth of extra chocolate runs.
