Overboost logging

Was out logging my k04-023 golf gti at lunchtime to find out if i still had an overboosting problem.

Tested with the n75 unplugged electrically and car was making 7psi which shows me the actuator and wastegate seems fine..

N75 plugged back in, car was requesting and making 1.3 bar which seems very healthy, although it didnt seem to be boosting like it should...

So, i did a fault scan and found the following....

14 Faults Found:

17526 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor Heating; B1 S2: Open Circuit
P1118 - 35-00 - -
17522 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor; B1 S2: Internal Resistance too High
P1114 - 35-00 - -
17978 - Engine Start Blocked by Immobilizer
P1570 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17633 - Fuel Injector for Cylinder 1 (N30): Short to Ground
P1225 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17635 - Fuel Injector for Cylinder 3 (N32): Short to Ground
P1227 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17636 - Fuel Injector for Cylinder 4 (N33): Short to Ground
P1228 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17634 - Fuel Injector for Cylinder 2 (N31): Short to Ground
P1226 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17833 - EVAP Purge Valve (N80): Short to Ground
P1425 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17956 - Boost Pressure Regulation Valve (N75): Open Circuit
P1548 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17843 - Secondary Air Pump Relay (J299): Short to Ground
P1435 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17938 - Camshaft Timing Adjustment: Short to Ground
P1530 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17829 - Secondary Air Injection Solenoid Valve (N112): Short to Ground
P1421 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17697 - Boost Pressure Control Valve (N249): Short to Ground
P1289 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17535 - Fuel Trim; Bank 1 (Mult): System too Rich
P1127 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

Any thoughts? Intake temperatures were steady at 31 degrees too, not sure if this is good or bad?

TIA

also i meant to say, i've done the n249 and n112 bypass and when i was doing the logging runs i could hear MUCH more air being pushed (possible boost leak) out the drivers side window. i thought this was dodgy, since the car might be making much more than 1.3 bar but only reading as 1.3 due to a leak? but then again, if the actuator is making 7 psi, what other way is there for the car to overboost?

Cant do that im afraid... and i dont want to run the car while ive got short to grounds on the injectors - bit dangerous

I've been told fuel pump relay may be the source of the short to ground faults?

So far i've worked out that my:

lambda faults are fine since im running a decat with no post cat sensor

immobilizer fault is a bit of a mystery

Boost Pressure Regulation Valve (N75): Open Circuit and Fuel Trim; Bank 1 (Mult): System too Rich is from when i disconnected and logged without the n75 connected

17938 - Camshaft Timing Adjustment: Short to Ground may or may not be down to the fuel pump relay

What are the dangers of the camshaft timing adjustment sensor being off?

cant clear the faults??? why not?

all are short to ground faults, that could be caused when you logged with no n75 on... id clear the faults and relog

also posting your logs would help aswell mate

yeh, i dont have the cable / vagcom and the guy who does isnt going to be around for a few days.

I'll try and get a cable and hard copy of the logs tomorrow and see where im at.

Thing is, i had a headlight go out and my wipers went really slowly last night so i have a funny feeling theres an electrical fault somewhere!

Managed to clear the fault codes, and the only ones that come back are the two rear lambda probe faults, which is fine.

Anyway, i got a chance to do a quick log, couldnt redline it as the road wasnt long enough and it was soaking wet but i got this...

need to log from 2500 to redline in 3rd to get some decent logs... maf readings all over due to revs up and down.

cant read boost properly unless through a good rev range.

actual is over specified though

try better logs mate

yeh sorry about that :ban:

this time i found a longer stretch of road but it was still pretty wet. tried going from third, kept spinning, changed into 4th, was still spinning but i held out as long as i could but alas couldnt get to redline as i ran out of road again!

ha ha ha.... spinning in 3rd and 4th... what id do mate is wait for a dry day and find a nice long stretch of road.. the rev range isnt consistent there so hard to read full maf and futy cycle.

start at 2.5k and redline it in 3rd pal.

maf does look a little high at 187g/s peak, what induction you running? also what bhp you pulling mate? i see its ko4, is that the hybrid conversion, if so maf figures may be fine.

boost looks okay, but hard to tell without proper power run.

I'm running the Evolution Motorsports V-Flow Intake with a custom dual airfeed from the bumper pods. I would have thought that 187 g/s is a little low?

I've not had the car rolling roaded but its stage 3 custom code mapped and was hoping it was pushing circa 270 bhp and 290 lbft of torque, im not sure if these figures suggest this but as you say, i need a dry run!

its a stock k04-023, and it seems like it's doing a decent job?

Yeh get it done in a nice dry stech (private rd of course). If the car spinning, then it effectin reading espically if the tcs is on.

Indeed. I was borrowing a cable from someone last night so i'm awaiting my serial pcmcia card so i can use another cable i have.

Traction control was turned off mind you, but i do need a dry run, as those maf figures seem very low to me and im not happy about maxing out the boost sensor at 2530mbar as thats a spike that could be higher than 1.5 bar :(

The 1.8T engines when running Custom Code maps seems to flow highest just shy of the red line so another run, as recommended by others, would be needed and idealy 4th gear would be best for this but your looking at jail terriorty speeds so be careful.

With the flow of 187g/s this equates to 243 ish bhp @4640 rpm and my LCR which last run 277bhp flows 162g/s at the same rpm.

Also notice that 4640rpm was the only point that you had the throttle 100% pressed.

Lets see what the new logs come back with...... :)

Hmm well that is interesting, thanks for that.

I think the boost is perhaps a bit high, and by the looks of it the turbo is very capable. It's only covered 12k miles so i'm thinking the turbo is doing a good job, plus it also seems to hold 1.2 bar at 5400 rpm so it's positive on that front i guess.

If you're running 277bhp and flowing almost 30 g/s less at the same rpm, would that not mean im running MORE than 280 bhp? I'd be amazed if that was the case, i've been told over and over again by certain people that i'll never make more than 270 bhp with a stock turbo / manifold and the weaker AUM bottom end....

Only thing I would say is that my engine is BAM but we are running the same turbo. Try doing a full run to the redline and see what we have then. :)
