Run .exe to install – (once installed, right click on the icon, and select to run as WinXP SP2, 'run as administrator' and hit 'ok') << that is just for Vista.

so whats run as .exe?

He's just saying to run the install like any other application ;-)
.exe is the filename extension used for Windows applications. Double click it.

Just having the software doesn't get you anywhere, actually everybody is free to grab the current version from our website for free. However, it won't work until being used with proper interface hardware which is being sold by our authorized distributors around the world.

Or course you can always go the 3rd parts route and use the old versions 311/409, but you should keep this in mind...

To update what I posted earlier in the thread, I now have my laptop back from repair with Win 7(RC) installed.
I just tried Shareware 409 and it seems to have worked without any issues. It detected everything straight away, read some fault codes and showed some measuring blocks.
I want to buy the Full Registered version of 409 but with the manufacturer saying it doesn't work it's a little off putting!
Lets be realistic, version 409 was released in September 2004. At that time nobody was aware how Vista and Windows 7 would actually work and what to look for when programming for those operating systems. That is exactly why we do not provide any support for these versions of VAG-COM on the mentioned operating systems. You will surely notice that all software works like that, but if you come across one that has programmers who are mind readers and can see the future before its here, feel free to refer them to us for a potential job offer.
Again, if you are using a current version of VCDS (that would be Release 908 at the moment) these are fully compatible to Windows Vista and Windows 7. The above restrictions only apply to old/outdated versions of the software.

I understand it is a very old version of the software but the way the website is worded suggests the software doesn't work on Vista or XP. Not that it 'may' not work or hasn't been tested on them.
Obviously the shareware version is helpful for you to find out yourself
The latest versions although a nice idea are far out of my price range.
Not to find out why on earth my new card has been declined..
I've bought several cables of ebay, none of which have worked even with shareware, it says my car is not OBD2 compatible? The cable works with the software, but doesn't seem to work with my car, tried lots of things and tried check compatibility, and it says my car isn't obd2 compatible, my car is a 54plate seat ibiza fr tdi 130 engine code asz. Any ideas anyone?
Just got Vagcom working ok on Win7. Just downloaded 409 from Rosstech and Win7 found all the correct drivers for me.
Found this guide which may be helpful. Helped me when I got stuck when I plugged it into my car.

Those old versions of VAG-COM which were fidgety to get running on Vista an 7 are now history, replaced by VCDS-Lite, which should work fine on all versions of Windows from 95 through 7.
