Toyo 888's, anyone tried them?

Having done a track day on my road tyres, I don't fancy trashing them again. Also the car understandably was suffering from a lack of grip/understeering so I was toying with the idea of fitting a set of Toyo r888 tyres to my original alloys just for track days. Anyone out there had any experience with these?

I've got them on my Edition 30. Fantastic tyres. I went with the GG rated, rather than the GGG soft tyres. They will last that little bit longer and have been fine on the road. There hasn't been a deal of rain since I had them on, but for what there has been, the tyres have been just as good as normal tyres. I'd probably go slow in standing water though
The tyres need looking after through the winter period and aren't recommended for use in freezing conditions. You need to lower the pressures if you store them and store them in temps over freezing, otherwise they can crack!
Wheelspin is all but eliminated in every gear except first, and even then you have to be heavy footed to break traction. On the bends you can carry at least 5-15mph extra and a launch from standstill will be much faster and cleaner.
I will be getting another set of either these or Yokohama A048's when these are used up

Interestingly they don't appear to be track use only, having checked.

Surely though they must be some kind of compromise? Otherwise wouldn't everyone use them? Perhaps this is purely wear rate!

Given all you lot with your remapped & enhanced Cupras etc, when you say drive carefully, do you mean normally

I'd go for the GG (medium) compound as i've seen the softs worn out after one track day! They are available in 225/40/18's, I've checked, would only use them for track days + to and from the track due to wear considerarions and they are pants apparently in standing water as there are no water clearing grooves, just a tread pattern to make them road legal!

id look into getting a diff fitted mate, AMD Essex were telling me how much of a difference it made on their race car, just a thought tbh as the 888's aint exactly cheap and after 2 sets you could have had a diff fitted.

Got to be honest, not taking it THAT seriously! Just don't want to trash my road tyres.......... Ta anyway!

I use 888's a lot on my (ex) 7 Racer... awesome tyre - but will not be available for very long as a road tyre - they heat up quickly but seem to overheat very quickly when driven very hard and that's on a 490Kg Car... on a Leon, they would overheat even quicker and suffer from degradation so fast.

I've no recommendations for a Leon on the Track but I'd stay away from 888's...

I've been driving with them for about a month now and the fronts still have the new "pimple" rubber on them. What you also have to consider with these is that there is only about 6mm of tread (I use the term tread loosely) when new, rather than the 8mm you get with normal tyres. I've used these hard in normal use and have already used them at York on the 1/4mile - with burnouts. I'm not expecting them to last long, but I thought I HAD to try them to find out for myself what all the fuss is about. I'll be taking them to the 'Ring and Spa (if it is open!) next weekend and fully expect to be buying some more tyres to get home. If you can afford road legal race tyres then you pay your money and take your chance, but so far, it is worth it for me.

You can buy R888's from Camskill in 18's for about £160 each delivered. I got a decent deal on some 17" R888's with the Team Dynamics 17" wheels.

I did read in one of the motoring magazines that from 2010 or 2011 that the semi slicks e.g. toyo 888 will be classed as illegal for road use , will see if i can find it again and scan it in.
But for trackday use will be fine , only downside is you will have to have a spare set of wheels.

Yup, there are plans afoot to ban them for road use in 2011.

i had a set on my corsa they were awsome tyres tho didnt really like the wet to much.. i had the medium compound as well i could tell you how many miles id get out of them as i sold it not long after i put them on but i would recommed them to anyone.. yokohama do i tread pattern simlier to them but more expensive
