Head unit change

I am looking to change the standard unit for a Alpine IPOD head unit.

I was thinking of doing it myself as my local halfords are prob the most useless place i have ever been to plus they don't have the better alpine headunit i want.

I notice that at the botom corners there are slots for releaser keys but to save on cost does anyone know what will work instead?

Once i get the unit out is it easy to thread the ipod lead through to the glove box or do i need to do something else?

Any help will be greatly apreciated.

Thanks in andvance

Nick

The keys are only a couple of quid, and they work. Some people suggest using a cut up credit card, but then all you're left with is broken plastic in the holes and a radio that hasn't moved.

It's easy to do mate, get a card you don't need any more, cut out 2 long thin strips, put them in the holes on the standard radio (they are bottom right and bottom left you will see) the card should only go in a little bit.

Take out the tray underneath it (it just pulls out) and push the radio from the back whilst pressing the card parts either side (makes sense when you do it).

To thread the iPod cable to the glovebox is also very easy, open the glovebox, you will see screws along the back, and at the front.
Undo those, and the panel comes off inside the glove box.

Feed the wire through, if your glovebox doesn't have a light, then you will have a small rectangular bit of plastic where it 'would' have been, simply pull that out, and put the wire through there.

Put the panel back, screw back up job done.

The hardest part of the whole thing, is putting the radio back in with all the wires at the back! Try and push the ISO blocks as far back as possible.

I put my headunit above the heater controls, and had the tray above it.

you should get release keys with the alpine head unit to release your old one i think so you should be ok, plus you'll need them again to put the new head unit in. should not be too much of a problem.

I can't get the tray below out either i have spilt blood over trying to get it out.

I tried the credit card trick with no jo and Zip ties but the both went in differnt lengths.

Can anyone help i was going to get releaser keys but not sure if someone has tried to remove the headunit before and broke it.

Help Needed!!!!!

Cheers in advance

The tray does need a good yank to get it out. I found the best way of doing it is to put your hand inside, palm facing up and put your fingers through some of the holes that are at the back and on the top of it. This lets you get a good grip.

To remove the headunit, maybe try the strip of credit card trick BUT when you push it into the slot, angle the end into the middle of the headunit (so the left one will be going in towards the right and vice versa) That seemed to work better with mine!

Just seems the tray won't budge it seems like the dash is more likely to come out as apose to the tray. I had tried that with the card but still no joy.

Thanks for the tips but this thing seems like it is happy where it is lol

Just put one strip of the credit card in the left hand side slot, push it in, then put your hand behind the head unit from underneath (where the cubby hole was) and pull it towards you, when you feel it move a bit, then do the same for the right hand side, should just slide out.

I wish i cud get the tray out but that won't even budge. Have tryed everything to get the tray out.

Do u know if there are any releaser points for the tray underneath cos it just won't budge!

as above, the tray should jus be yanked out as the only clipping point is at the rear in the centre (not even a clip really)

try using the keys that come with your new hu once you receive it, that may solve your hu removal problem

The new hedunit didn't have any releaser keys with it which i thought was crap! My head unit won't budge with any of the tips mentioned and nor will the tray. I do think it has been glued cos it seems to be stuck on different points around the tray not just in the middle. :wtf:
