Seat Leon: Service Intervals

Hi,

I bought a SEAT Leon FR in September last year.

It's on an 07 plate and was registered new in December 2007.


After buying the car the garage gave it a service in the September (2008). It was on about 6000 miles.

The garage has booked it in for it's second service for this September. The cars currently at 10,500 miles.

The question is, can I delay the service till December (2 years since the car was new) and still maintain the service warranty??

I've heard you should have the service every 10,000 miles or every 2 years to keep the warranty.

Since it's only done 10,500 miles I'm wondering if I can hold out till December?

Isn't the standard service 10,000 miles or 1 year which ever comes first.

So you should get it done September really.

Yes, I thought that was the case but because it was serviced last September (on 6000 miles) I thought I might be able to wait until December (2 years old)?

Are you sure you've got its registration date correct? If it was registered in December 2007 it would be a 57 plate.

So, if I'm right in my understanding, irrelevant of the fact it was serviced last September the second service is due at 20,000 miles or 2 years.

So I can wait until December (when the car is 2 years old) for the service?

It is relevant about the first service been done early, otherwise if waiting until December this will be 15 months between 1st and 2nd service and the interval is taken from the previous service.

Maybe or maybe not as both viewpoints are valid, particularly on such a relatively low mileage vehicle.
If it was me I would be calling Seat UK for clarification re warranty validity, the dealer is likely to be biased as no doubt they want any work asap to assist cashflow.
Maybe even act dumb and call another dealer or two to get their view.

I'll call SEAT UK and find out what's what. I know there's only a few months in it but I just wanted to know so I could stretch out the warranty for as long as possible.

If it was serviced at 6000 miles which was the end of year one, it should be serviced at 16000 miles or a year from its last service.

In your case you have only put 4500 in one year so your are suppose to get it serviced September 2009.

The reasoning for the year is due to the natural deteriation of the component (ie seals and filters) that are changed in service.

To make this clearer, those component can withstand 10,000 miles of driving (this is average yearly millage) or one years being exposed to the elements.

I hope I havent confused you with this.

You are right.

I've been in touch with a SEAT dealership and they say it must be serviced in September (1 year from last service), irrelevant of the mileage.

So taking this into account I'm booking it in next week for it's second service.

Thanks to everyone who posted, hopefully this thread will help someone else who may be confused about the service interval.

Don't you guys find this quite unfair by SEAT ?

I am in a similar boat to you, Chris. My Cupra is almost 2 years old, with just 3,900 miles on the clock.

I too had to get it serviced after 12 months. My car is cocooned in a heated state of the art garage and never spends a night outside. It's mint. and the oil looks as clear as champagne...yet we still have to get this expensive service done.

I shopped around and only paid £100 plus VAT.

I recommend you try that too.

Which seals, and for that matter filters, are changed at the 10000 mile service (or 6000 in this case) that are exposed to the elements (for a significantly reduced mileage/exposure in this case)????

As far as I can make out the 1st 10000 mile service is no more than an oil and filter change plus cursory checks of brake wear (which requires mileage), lights, washers etc.
Common sense still says to me Seat give all other components 2 years, not 21 months, minimum lifetime or 20000 miles.

I agree, Jedi. The SEAT garage I bought it from were trying to charge me £160 for the service

After shopping around I managed to get a quote for £80 so went back to SEAT and told them this and they matched that price.

So in the end I saved myself over half the original price. Proper rip off merchants, they are!
