Forge TIP problems?

I fitted my Forge TIP to my LC (AUQ) today and can honestly say that in 7 years of working on cars it is the most awkward thing I have ever fitted, but more surprisingly to me was what appears to be a very poor effort at locating the ports in a fashion resembling the old one.

It was damn awkward to get past that metal coolant pipe which I was expecting just not to that degree and in the end took 2 people one above and one below to get the pipe onto the turbo flange, luckily enough I was doing the job on a ramp.

Like I say that part I was expecting, but it was maybe 15mm short of the airbox which had to be forced across and clamp tightened to hold in place, the dump valve has had to be side mounted for the vac hose to reach as its so much further upwards and the engine cover can't be refitted whichever way round the dump valve is as it physically wont fit, the dump valve now rests on the vac reservoir above coil 4 so has had to padded away with foam to prevent it rattling on it.
I need to extend the vac pipe for the dump valve to get it the right way as the noise is hideous on its side, is like a squeaking noise.

Theres doesn't appear to be any movement in the tip, I tried loosening it off the turbo flange and twisting it which isn't possible so it appears to be just badly designed or a bad one, but I havent seen anybody mentioning any problems with component location after fitting them so I really don't know. I havent contacted forge yet as i'm really not in the mood to do so tonight.

The package does say AUQ engine code and FMGOLFIND and it was brought via F1 Brighton but dispatched directly from Forge.

Heres some pics I took.

If anybody has any tips or advice other than leave the engine cover off or relocate the dump valve then please feel free to share them

The LCR one has a different diameter on the MAF doesn't it this one is the right diameter on the connections, they just don't seem to be in the right place and it seems a touch too short where it joins the MAF

Like I say I havent seen of anybody having problems and a search didnt show anything so it doesn't really make sense yet. I intentionally decided on a Forge one as opposed to the cheaper ebay one as I thought it would be better quality and a good fit.

I am booked in at P-Torque a week saturday so if i'm none the wiser by then I'll ask Will what he makes of it as I think he fits them. If it is a problem with the pipe I dont know if I can even bring myself to remove it and fit a new one, it really has troubled me that much this afternoon.

That makes interesting reading as I have also bought mine for my AUQ engine also from F1 Brighton but it was delivered direct from Forge due to a delay I think.

I have yet to fit it so will bear in mind what you have said.

Yes I think thats just the way they operate it (it coming from forge).

Not to put you off mate but I really don't envy you having it to fit, I never intend to fit another it really was that bad, do you have access to a ramp or are you just doing it on the drive?

Will at P-Torque said he could fit it for £45 if i had got one off him, wish I had taken that option.

can you swap the dv and the mushroom valve ports on the tip to makes things fit better? they are both 25mm are they not?

Unfortunately the mushroom one is smaller I did try lol, I think with a lot of force the dv might squeeze in but I gave it quite a bit and it wouldn't so I switched them back.

I have a Forge one excatly the same......and I have excatly the same problem!

My forge 007 will only fit in reverse [I think its reversed my mate thinks its actually designed to be fitted how I have it]

Mines not as bad as yours as I managed to get mine on the air box ok but the ports dont seem to be in the factory positions.

Maybe that's the way it is with the forge ones then, maybe they just aren't as well designed as the samco and sfs ones.

The dump valve is meant to sit the other way which I plan to return to as I hate the squeak it makes on it's side. Mine would need me to cut the engine cover but I put it in the boot for now til I decide what I'm doing, your engine cover looks the nuts painted blue btw.

Now I had a big debate about what way the valve was surposed to be fitted and my 2 mates reckoned [by blowing and sucking in the valve...oh er!] that its going to perform better fitted how I have it........it certainly works well how I have it and doesn't really seem to make a different noise from before

Thanks for comment about the cover, I think its going to have to come off soon to fit my FMIC but I have a painted rocker cover now instead :D

Defected!
I've found that Forge have very good customer service. Send a PM to either Forgemotorsport or John@forge with your pics and I'd be very suprised if they did'nt sort something out for you. They helped me out with an intercooler pipe that was damaged through my own fault. (Although they are a bit tight with their keyrings!)

Yeah it's been debated to death on here too, my theory is that it's better with the charge acting on the side of the valve and the bottom into the tip, this is also how forge show it and how the old one was. The sound before was like a rush of air, now on it's side it makes a squeak that I can only describe as being like a rusty gate hinge.

Do you have to lose the engine cover when you fit a fmic?

On my one you do because I'm running a pipe across top of engine like they do on the golfs.

Mine sounds nothing like a rusty gate it sounds like a normal dump valve only quieter

Oh I see, I've not seen that set up before, does it have any advantages doing it that way?

I'll try and see if the voice recorder on my phone can pick it up, it must depend on the individual valves as there's quite a few different accounts of the sound created each way

Yeah, it gets rid of the crappy bottom intercooler pipe that either restricts flow or hits wheel if made bigger.
