my car is loud but not as loud as a 430 ferarri!! so because my car is louder than standard but quiter than 430 ferarri the ferarri is legally alloweed to make the louder noise and the MOT people or vosa cant do naff all about it

Makes me laugh this, all the 20vt engines ive ever heard and ive heard a few seriously tuned ones too.
they are not a noisey engine, but my old rover coupe turbo when that was on full chat was :)

I would think that 20vt engines themselves are louder than the exhaust, felt like my ears were going to bleed last time I was on a RR

There is a legal limit for noise for any road car which it must pass. I only know this through building my own car and having to get it through the VOSA noise test. The noise limit is 102dB @ 2/3 of the max engine power speed (not the red line rpm) - e.g if you car makes peak power at 6k rpm then the test is at 4k rpm. Believe me, thats incredibly loud and my cari only scraped through the test!

HOWEVER, there is a stipulation that any type approved production car must be within the manufactured noise limits (all new V5 certs have the factory noise level printed on them) so if the MOT tester feels that the car is louder than it left the factory he is within his rights to fail it. If you appeal you will have to take the car for a noise test. If it fails you'll have to fit a std exhaust.

The idea is to cut down on anti-socially loud exhausts as fitted to most chavved saxos, corsas etc.

ok some MOT news!! ok dervs DONT need a cat or a back boz, they can be as loud as 120 decebels to be road legal!!
NEW MOT rules as i found out the hard way
if its louder than a standard car its a straight fail(my tester let me off cos he has not heard a standard 130 leon so he cant judge ;)
if any boxes are removed from the zorst system its not road legal or if there is not cat present its a fail regardless if it passes the smoke test like mine did!!
mine passed as i new the tester and i showed him the miltek website to prove there road legal woithout a cat or back box!!!
just a warning to derv peoploe who have not cat or back boxes!!
oh and mork you was right lol
just vosa being silly i think!! but i will be buying a middle silencer to keep the noise down incase my tester does happen to hear a standard leon 130 tdi ;) and realises there quiter than mine

120 decebels! you must be joking, where did you get your info from?

Its all done on engine performance. 84 decebels is the loudest any car can be over 203bhp. I started a tread last week on all of this as I work for VOSA and want a CAT back exhaust but wanted to know the levels from each aftermarket exhaust. D&C Police are sticking people on for anything over 90dB's.

David, 102dB's was the old limits its now 99db's (if it makes a difference!). Now 99dB's is for a kit car as it is being kinda type approved. A manufactured car (SEAT, Ferrari, Aston Martin) have already made type approval set out by the EU rules. I have the link at work so i'll post it up next week once back from holiday, unless someone fancy's searching for it!

At MOT a Tester is well within his rights to fail a car if the noise emmited is well above that of a standard silencer in average condition (think M0RK had the words right out of the inspection manual in an earlier post).

My exhaust is standard and I tested it last week and it hit 77dB's on the meter.

Anyway, anybody with a loud exhaust, illegally tinted front windows and incorrectly spaced number plates are just drawing attention to themselves. The laws the law!

Yeh all this is pretty much true, i got rid of my 'zaust last week for a standard one as im kind of stuck in the middle in all this!

The two things for this year were the number plates and the exhausts.

Number plates can be revoked if spaced/displayed incorrectly on the 2nd time of "tugging".

And the 'zaust thing boils down to if your louder than standard, much like any vehicle defect, traffic can issue the relative paperwork (rectification notice) as well the whole MOT failure when your due for a retest.

Trouble is with the "friendly" centres, MOT's are done online, so a VOSA van could be parked around the corner and monitor the "passes", so testers are less likely to do the favours nowadays.

yes we can!

MOT testers who fail you on something like that, are just thick...

If someone failed me for that I'm NEVER going there again, for another ****ing MOT for a start, and he's bottom of the list for where I go for repairs or servicing from now on... idiot to do that really, just more likely to put yourself out of business...

I've read before that all of this is due to yet more stupid EU fiddling that is shafting people. The laws are brought in by EU boffins and as ever the UK have to jump into line and lap it all up.

Its all well and good to brand any 'lesser' car out there (saxos, corsas etc) with a loud exhaust 'chavvish' but what's wrong with someone younger or with less money to spend on a car fitting after market exhausts, induction kits etc?

Its all a complete farce in my opinion and is clearly yet another law that has been thought up by the anti-car brigade.

Even loud so-called chavvish Saxos don't emit the same kind of noise as the motorbikes with race cans that blast up and down everywhere.... and what's the difference between the 'chavs' blasting around at 2am through neighbourhoods and the noisy, smoky delivery trucks or the loud freight trains that chug up and down near those of us living next to railway lines or the low flying planes?

My old MG ZS180 had plenty of exhaust mods and clocked up at 92db at Castle Combe in 2007. It purred when idling and was hardly deafening when on song. Under the modern laws then strictly speaking it should fail an MOT, which is ridiculous. How can the law set the limit so low?

Some people need to just get over themselves. Its not as if every car in the country had a loud de-catted big bore fitted is it?

unless the mot station has the equipment to check sound levels, i find it very unjust that the tester will make you fork out another £50 for a mot test just on his opinion.

would he fail an AMG CL55 over a CL500 because the AMG has a thunderous exhaust from the factory over the 500? desipte both looking exactly the same?

bit pants this

isnt AMG a different car to Mercedes?

Anyway, if the MOT garages where told to measure the exhaust noise it means more time will be spent on a test and extra equipment will need to be purchased and calibrated each year. If this was done then the MOT fee would need to increase and no one would like that speacially the people who have not modified their exhaust.

The inspection manual that testers use are full of subjective and objective decisions. Subjective are decisions like excessive corrosion, play in a steering joint and exhaust noise. Objective decisions are things like 1.6mm minimum tread depth and 1.5mm brake lining material.

A tester has to use his experience, qualifications and knowledge of different vehicles for subjective decisions and if he thinks a exhaust is louder than that of a standard one in average condition tested at idle and 2500rpm to 3000rpm, he can fail it. Remember this is a static check and not under load.
