Thats a external wastgate. Most turbos are internaly gated.

whilst i'm asking stupid questions ,which i shall blame on being ill.......
is that manifold / turbo arrangement (turbo on top) how it will be fitted on the car or will it be the other way up as it doesn't look like they going to be able to shut the bonnet?

Yep, top mount turbo. Makes the plumbing side of things so much easyer.
