Indicators - Strange Goings On !!

Hi,

I’ve read a few threads about dodgy indicators, dodgy stalks etc but I can’t find one to best fit my problem.

The bulb warning light is on and one of the rear indicators is out and the indicator ticks fast, no problem with that.

But when I put the alarm on the indicator flashes so I know it’s not the bulb. Also it’s intermittent so on another journey the bulb warning light is off and the indicator ticks normally.

The front indicators work so don’t think it is the stalk.

I recently replaced my rear brake light and thought I might as well do them both. The indicator that is playing up is on the side with the good brake light and seen as both brake lights work I’m confident it’s not the wiring.

What I’m wondering is could it be the connection within the unit ? When you replace the brake light you pull it out of the unit and the indicator sits behind, I’m assuming the small metal clips are the contacts as the wiring plugs into the brake light section… but then again if it was the connection surely the indicator wouldn’t flash with the alarm ? Confused !!!

Any advice appreciated, yesterday morning they weren’t working, on the way home they were and this morning they weren’t !!

Thanks

Would it be the side repeater out? difficult to see them, try it in the dark and set hazards on. Relay playing up?

Excuse my ignorance, but by side repeater I assume you mean the indicators on the side wing ?

Yes, my nearside rear is playing up but front and side work. When the bulb light has been lit I've stuck the indicators on and walked round the car and only the rear indicator is out. Fact it comes on with the alarm suggests it's not the bulb.

If a relay was playing up would it affect the other 2 nearside indicators though ?

I'm assuming the problem would show up on VAGCOM ?

Cheers

Yea, indicators on the wings. That is strange, like it isnt getting the signal from the stalk but is from the alarm system, does it work with hazards on? relay might effect both sides? Vagcom or good auto-electrician could be your best bet.

Cheers googies

Just nipped out to the drive and the indicator is working but bet my bottom dollar it will play up tomorrow.

Just whacked the hazards on and they work.

I'll take your advice about auto electrician. How much would a dealer charge for a diagnostic check on Vagcom, any idea ?

Last time i had car on a dealer system (me paying that is) was around 2.5yrs ago, looking at £45 back then. £50/60 now i would imagine. See VagCom section for anyone near you to check it out.
