Thanks for clarification - I thought the previous info sounded wrong.

I am actually thinking of having this mod on my VW Bora 1.9 TDI (130) - I assume the prices apply to this as well as a Leon?

So it would be £550+vat for labour and parts (minus the diff unit itself)?
Add ontop of this the price of buying the diff (quaife / wavetrack / whatever) for final cost
Is this right?

Ta.

Sounds a good addition to the Bora and yes it would be the same as the Leon, what gearbox code does your Bora have?

The labour would be £400 + VAT. The fitting kit, shims and bearings would differ in price according to whether it is a 5speed or 6speed box

The price of the diff would then be added on to the above price

Leigh, can you clarify with respect to the above link and what you have said in this post what is the exact standing for this diff. There are a few conflicting stories between the two

What part within that thread are you wanting to clarify, the only thing i know that is different is the Warranty from Autotech on the Wavetrac - as per this thread the warranty is a lifetime one against direct failure of the diff

Leigh, the bit where I asked how much the fitting of a diff would be to a gear box on a pallet and the warranty in respect to racing the car.

Leigh, the bit where I asked how much the fitting of a diff would be to a gear box on a pallet and the warranty in respect to racing the car.

To fit a diff to a box out of the car you are looking at approx £500 inc VAT : included is,diff fitting kit, bearings, shims and gearbox oil.The diff price would be additional to this and is dependant on diff.

The warranty on the Autotech is : covered for all race, track and drag use if the diff unit itself fails in any way.If the diff unit fails due to foreign object damage then it isnt covered.

For full warranty conditions please feel free to ask and i will PM them to you

So diff fitting including fitting to car is £550 + VAT, on a pallet its £500 + VAT?

The price to fit the diff including removing the gearbox is £716 inc VAT
Price to fit the diff to a supplied gearbox is approx £500 inc VAT

Gripper diffs are crap - poor QC on machining and manufacture

Kaaz are supposed to be pretty good

But for a road car - torsen-type diff is the way to go IMO - quaife / peloquin / maybe wavetrack but they are too dear presently

I had read about Bills experience with the Gripper, but don't understand why he fitted it if he knew it was poorly put finished.

The car will be used mainly for sprints, hillclimbs, trackdays and occasional road use so i'm wanting to get a plate diff.

I haven't sold it yet but if i can find a diff along the same lines as the Gripper then it'll be up for sale.

well I have been using a quaife for sprints / hillclimbs / trackdays and road use for 10years, and have several championship wins so it must work ok.........

personally I wouldn't fit a plate diff to anything but an out-and-out competition car, especially a gravel rally car - actually for hillclimbs with very tight corners, a torsen is better than a plate diff as it lets the car turn more sharply ;)

Bill didn't know it was wrong until he fitted it - and then they messed him around for several weeks as well, appalling service, but your choice

I never said the ATB's don't work well but since i'm having the box ripped apart for the new bits i'd like to get maximum performance for the amount i want to spend.

Have you ever run a plate diff? The reason i'm asking is that all the guys i know that do hillclimbs/sprints run plate diffs and advised me to get one. Would the turn in not be more to do with car set up rather than the diff?

That's not good, cheers for the heads up on Gripper.;)

I have never run a plate diff but have beaten a lot of cars with them fitted. It depends what you want to do with the car - plate diffs lock the front wheels together and are better on the loose or if you jump curbs a lot and end up with one wheel in the air - the downside is that they tend to make a car understeer more and not turn tightly so well - I would like the added drive over curbs but are not prepared to sacrifice this for loss of 'turn ability'. If you do long tracks, then the ability to turn quickly is not so important, as the bends are longer, so its horses for courses really.

The leon has a massive amount of suspension travel though so I would be VERY suprised if you spent much time with one wheel in the air - precisely what plate diffs are designed to deal with

A lot of the big single seater hillclimbers use cam-and-pawl diffs which are very similar in operation to a torsen - this is so they can go quickly round tight corners

:wtf:

Of course I did'nt know it was made wrong or shite or the company would then fob me off with every excuse under the sun, else I WOULD NOT HAVE USED IT EVER.

You have at least read my findings of its CRAP nature and may take heed of the warning, courtesy of my own BAD experience [B)]

Like i said the car will be mainly for track(knockhill) Sprints, hillclimbs and occasional road use when i fancy or need to run it to make sure i've put it back together properly:whistle:

From what i've seen from the last hillclimb quite a few of the cars had the inside wheel off the ground i'd imagine the ibiza would be pretty similar being as ridged as it is.

Sorry Bill it's the way i read it. You said the machining was bodged so i presumed you must have seen this prior to fitting or during fitting.

I will definitely be taking heed of this warning and staying well clear of the Gripper's!!
