funny noise squealing HELP!!

my ibiza (pd130) has started to make a funny squealing / squeaking noise from the engine. when you pull away with low revs it makes the noise almost like a fan belt slipping but not as loud. it does the same in 2nd and 3rd at low revs (below 1500) once u go above 1500 revs the noise vanishes or the same is true if u pull away with higher revs.

the noise is more noticeable when the windows are up, put them down and you cannot hear it to such an extent. ive had a look under the bonnet to try and trace the source and it seems to be coming from the alternator area ??auxillary drive belt??? ive noticed that the belt has a tensioner wheel on it is it possible this is the source of the sqeaky squeal? i initially thought it may be the clutch or the flywheel but the sound seems to be coming from the left side of the engine not the right and also there is no clutch slip at all ( as you would expect in a 56 reg car! only done 28,000 miles now)

sooooooo any ideas? just want to get any thoughts before it goes into seat.

thanks.

i doubt it would be from the aux belt as i thought mine had that problem as mine squeaks only when cold for a few seconds. they said the aux belt was in prestine condition and could not be the source...

If it sounds like a squeeky hamster wheel then it could well be the aux belt tensioner. It's common for them to start squeeking even if the belt is ok. It's pretty easy to replace and costs about £70.

If this noise if only when it is cold and damp in the morning I would but money on it being the aux belt. If it does it when the engine is nice and warm it could be your clutch slipping  but I hope it isn't.

thanks guys, the clutch really seems fine even under really hard acceleration it dusnt show signs of slipping my fabia vrs used to slip badly so can remember how that started and the ibiza doesnt seem to have any of the problems (slight slip at from 3 to 4K then back down etc)

like i said the noise seems to be more pronounced when the engine is cold and under load at low rpm almost like something is wobbling then above a certain rpm it gets pulled back in line, which is what made me think it may be the tensioner wheel. its going into seat soon for a few warranty jobs so ive got them to put it down on the list of to do's! hopefully its only the tensioner wheel, fingers crossed!

if it's anything like mine then they'll come back to you saying the aux belt is clean and in perfect condition...however it has stopped squeaking on cold startup so they must have done something

Sorry to bump this thread, I've basically got the same problem as the OP. I've got a Cupra TDI and it's actually due a cambelt change about 5K ago.

Should I just disregard the above and get the cambelt etc changed and hopefully that should solve the issue?

Thanks,
Kyle

Just as it comes on boost by any chance? Almost like a bizarre whistley squeel the goes instantly? Have a feel under the egr for any split flexies then check around the exhaust manifold for soot, mine did this and the exhaust manifold gasket had failed.

I put a new belt on mine and it began squealing after a couple of weeks so just because it looks new doesn't mean anything. I eventually swapped it for a gatorback belt which has solved the problem and has a 60k mile guarentee

Hello mate,

No it's basically when it's idling. Doesn't seem to effect the car, no slipping or anything like that, just a horrendous noise. When I get over 2K revs or so there not really any noise until I get below that again.

Sounds like a belt of some sort squealing away but I couldn't tell you which one and it may not even be a belt. It doesn't do it in one type of weather condition either (I don't think) just seems to be when it wants.

in which case i'd check the aux belt, tensioner and maybe even the alternator pulley for issues

Thanks,

I'll get them looked at this week and see if I can address the problem. Is this related to the cambelt etc? Sorry for possibly a silly question.

Thanks

I had the same problem 3 days ago my 130pd FR it started squeaking from the same area (alternator belt) took it to a mates garage and he took and look and it and after a bit of playing around with it he found it was the tensioner on the alternator belt his supplier said its quite common on these engines. new tensioner cost about £50 if you look about or a bit cheaper if u can get it trade price.

Hope this helps

I forgot to post a response to this. For anyone interested;

The squeaking noise as it turns out is actually coming from the heating fan. Or at least it only makes these noises when it is turned on. Never noticed before but it only squeaks when the the climate control is turned on - how did I not notice that? Turn it off and no noises at all.

I've not done anything about it mind you but as others have pointed out I think it just needs a new tensioner but now I know what it is I just turn the heating off when it's not required instead of driving around with it on all the time.

Thanks for all the help by the way.
