Just thought i'd let everyone know i've replaced the temp sensor and everything seems to working great! so hopefully that's sorted it!..touch wood. Thanks for all your help

Hi Bethany12, I'm having the same problems with the cay not starting after a short run etc.. Was it definately the temp sensor that sorted it out & do you know where its located by any chance.

I'd guess as that poster never converted to being a full member of this forum, and that last posting was 6.5 years ago, not she will not come back with an answer, in fact I feel that she did confirm that replacing that sensor did resolve that car's starting issues in her last posting.

Ideally with modern cars it is always best to get the stored fault codes read, or if none, read some live data to see what might be causing your problem, maybe see if there are any forum members that have VCDS close to you and request a meeting and a scan of your car - for a reward!

The genuine sensor costs a lot of money, something like £40, though there are people selling them complete with the seal and retaining clip on ebay for about £25 - I discovered this AFTER buying a new sensor for daughter's Ibiza, it does not have a starting problem, but I spotted that it was logging "bad" values when I scanned it using VCDS.

Thanks for your help. I've located the sensor and the previous owner must have had issues as its got insulation tape wrapped around it & its being held in by a cable tie!! but wasn't getting any reading on my diagnostic too (icarsoft i908).

It is a nuisance that nothing showed when you scanned it, might just be "incorrect" but still within the "operational window" of expected values, if it really is a coolant temperature issue. A bit suspicious having things not looking right with the cable at that sensor though, I'd have expected some intermittent "error" values getting stored if that wiring was causing a problem. Maybe this is where VCDS comes into its own as it talk to the engine controller and see what is in its fault log while maybe your scan tool only looks at the major "light putting on" faults stored in the instrument panel. For example, I have Carista just to use "out on the road" - it did not pick up a coolant temperature intermittent fault as it was not forcing the MIL on, and it can't talk to the engine ECU on that Ibiza 1.4 SC, VCDS found that fault when I used it to scan the car after carrying out a service. I'm just saying that to show that this can happen.
