You could try the hall sender on the distributor. My mates car cut out when it had warmed up and then started when cooled down. That was a 2l corrado engine so don't know how similar the bits are.

Changed the HT cables this morning - 3 of them, including the main cable from the dizzy had very black crusty ends at the dizzy cap end! Not just soot either, looked like a spark has been arcing for a while now! :)

I havent driven it any distance yet, although I am sure the ride feels smoother somehow already...

I think I'll change the cap, rotor arm and sparkies too if I can tomorrow, since I think they'll probably be next to go. The cap looks skanky as f*** from the outside... I'm a little miffed that it wasnt picked up on during its last service, there's no way that damage has been done in the last 3000 miles - time to have a word methinks or change garage...

Going to for a blast round the forest tomorrow to see if its fixed, will keep ya'll updated! :)

In the meantime, I have a spare fuel pump relay should anyone need one ;)

I only sussed the spark on mine due to a neighbour standing chatting to me as i tried starting it one day, he mentioned it, then he turned car over whilst i looked.

Thanks, :) I haven't quite been able to bring myself to ring my old man yet so that he can gloat that he was right, but I shall have to give him the pleasure tomorrow if nothing goes wrong...

Fingers crossed! :D

Still not happy, so no gloating for the oldies yet ;)

Went for a burn in the forest and true to form, after about half an hour, cut out. I was doing 60, so just left it in gear and tried the throttle every now and then. Just when it looked like I was going to stop it came back to life again and carried on for at least another 3 miles. Stopped at a friends for an hour, and then a quick 20 min blast home and was still ok.

So I took the dizzy off to have a look, and the 4 contacts are crusty as hell and black, and the rotor arm is too.

Gave them a good scraping for the meantime, but will try to replace them both tomorrow - they look shot.

Soaked the KN air filter in cleaner and re-oiled it just in case crud was getting in and took it for a burn around the block and it drives wonderfully, but we'll have to see tomorrow. Its a real arse having to drive for over half an hour to get an intermittent problem to show up [:@].

There isn't much more to replace on this side - the coil, HT leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm, and sparkies - anything else? I dont mind doing these bits cos they all look knackered anyway and have served me well.

Thanks as always!

Nick

My car is STILL cutting out after half an hour or so, and this morning, when trying to get it going again, the starter motor (i think) has died. Further to the original post, I've changed the ECU relay too now, and its definately not that thats causing the problem.

When I turn the key to start it, there is a buzz like a spindle is spinning, but the engine doesn't turn over. Would this be the starter motor or solenoid? I'm currently stuck on the 7th floor of a multistorey car park, and about to call the AA but since I'm at work, I can get a lift to the local supplier instead of paying AA costs for parts...
It died all the way up the motorway, then finally conked out just beside a parking space in the car park! Class - gotta love the little thing - at least I'm getting paid while its sat there dead! ;)

Please help!

hello mate its the aa man that fitted your startermotor today, just a thought on your running problems have you checked the body earth points because when you say you have a clicking noise from the fue box this sounds more like a poor connection /bad earth rather than a sensor issue let me know how you get on

Hey! Thanks for the reply, superb service by the way :).

There are a few earths by the looks of it, so I will start to clean each of them that I can find, but are there any in particular that I should look for? It hasnt died since, but then I've only driven 25 minutes to home.

Thanks Cuprakid, I feel a wire-brush session is in order...
I'm going to attempt to change my crankshaft sensor too this morning - Pedro did a fantastic job of making it as inaccessible as possible, hiding it in a little inset behind the oil filter...:censored:

I had this on my golf, had the throttle cleaned, new leads, coil, relay 30, cam sensor, dizzy, and then finaly a new dizzy cap.
The problem, I had a hairline crack in the dizzy cap that was letting damp etc in and affecting the spark!

Wow - what a job!

Had to take the starter motor off again, and the metal plate that conveniently hides the screw for the sensor (which incidentally is one of the engine mounts) to get at the bolt! Luckily, a friend just round the corner has an engine hoist of all things - man am I grateful...

Managed to change the sensor - the old one has visible bare wires where the insulation has disintegrated, and lots of lovely conducting gunk that would start to run and make a contact when warm... Will take a picture when I get 5...

Fingers crossed that this is the culprit - I really cannot blame the car, the sensor is nearly 13 years old.

Thanks again to all the advice - I have cleaned a few earths so far, but they all look very much good - I will start the laborious task of cleaning them all tomorrow if the problem persists!

Woohoo!! Drove for an hour and a half today and not a hint of a problem! I think we may have fixed it!

Here is a picture of the dead sensor - lots of nice bare metal there...

Thanks again to everyone that's helped - and hats off to andyj for the earlier post mentioning the crank position sensor - a gold star for you!!

Having changed the bits that have though, the ride in my car is the sweetest its been since i've owned it I think :).
