Smoothing bumpers

Well I've been on the lookout for an LCR bumper but seeing as they are so expensive, I've thought maybe I could be creative and ask - has anyone here seen or heard of a prefacelift front and rear bumper smoothed in so that the bump strips don't exist? What would be a good material to use (fibreglass? Filler?). My grandad and myself are very handy lol with the right tools available so skills are no problem to do this. Could look good?

been there done that and didnt look that great. Plastic welding is the only way to get a good finnish on it and you have to use the same plastic as the bumper. moment id done it i went and bought the cupra kit cause it just didnt look good. the front isnt wide enough to putt it off.

and the rear looked like a cupra rear anyway

EDIT: ACTUALLY as my front bumper could do with a respray due to stone chips, I'm gonna give this a whirl and see how it turns out.

This is big on the mk3 golfs, smoothing out the fog lights. There used to be a couple of walkthrough's on the Ed38 website etc.

One method as James said is plastic welding, then smooth it down, filler, smooth, paint. Or you use fibreglass and filler.

Only issues with fibreglass and filler is that if you dont do it well it can drop and will look rubbish.

The other thing is that with the prefacelift bumper, the mounting bolts are behind the bump strips. Smooth them over and you can no longer remove the bumper.............

this is the major problem i had you need to leave the screws behing the strips out.


and that just makes the bumper sag.

best way round that is to drill the threads out and use the bolts mounted in the bumper as pegs to locate it
