A 1400 can be anywhere between 1350 and 1449. My 1.8T and yours are 1781cc so the +/- 10cc argument hold no water.

Of course if you change a 1400 to 1600 you have to tell the dvla and insurance.

OK yeah, the tolerances are more than 10cc each way but that's not the point.
My point was that if the factory are selling stroked 1.4 engines that have a capacity of 1.6 then they will be a 1.6 on the V5

IMO stroking will not increase capacity on a 1.4 to 1.6, same as a re-bore will not take one from 1.4 to 1.6 either, I reckon both together will maybe take it to 1.5 max and then you will need head work too

I have had mini engines re-bored in the passed (to the max) and the capacity went from 1275 to 1340 any more and the gap between bores is too slim :think:

Thats 65cc over all 4 pots not 50cc per pot

some are suggesting cams for the mk4 1.4 16v engine but i don't think you can get them anywhere....had a my friend (seat mechanic) trying to source some cams from germany but could get any. if any one manages to get some, i would very greatful to know where you got them form and how they are :). thanks

you were saying about 125bhp.. with airfilter, exhaust and if you check out the custom code stage two for 1.4 16v 100bhp engine they have an advised bhp of 115-125. not bad without really fiddiling about with internals of the engine

1.4 16v to gti

hello my names john and well im a newbie to SCN. i drive a 1.4 16v polo and am a member or well i use the clubpolo forum. i was browsing for info on the 1.4 16v to gti conversion and came across this thread.

what ive been told so far there is a guy on clubpolo hu has carried out the conversion and increaed the bhp to 136.8 or so on the dyno from 100 bhp standard thats not bad. im buying a gti bottom end for 200 with 47000 miles on it for my car and was told that the 1.4 head was better as it was machined better for air flow and would give me a lower compression. i eventually want to supercharge my car and get it up to 200 bhp i was planning to use 1.6 gti lupo injectors and i already have upgraded spark plugs and leads. not too sure on my ecu hopefully it can just be mapped. but on reading your thread use dont think its workth it or any advice is it a bolt on bolt off job i dont mind getting my head machined iv already got the gti disck set up front and rear and a set of collies and all new bearings discs pads track rod ends wishbones you name it its been or is being replaced.
i thought all id need is new head gasket and a set of head studs.

the only concern i have is the gearbox ive just had mine rebuilt had the car on the road a week and my housing is cracked had to spend sunday stripping it out again but i have a spare housing. it probly wont last the crack but i hear the g40 boxs have a similar ratio to the early 16 valvers so ill just suck it and see.


can anyone give me a def answer on wether or not it is worth doing or how difficult they thing it is possible to do i was planning on using my 1.4 cams as ther aint a mark on them plus im already running at bout 110 - 115 bhp. any advice would be great thanks John

I really think that VAG missed a trick when they launched all these small cars - but no "warm 1.6" version. My wife's previous car was a 1994 Fiesta with a 90PS 1.6 16V Zetec engine, as that engine in its lesser 90PS form was very tractable and not greedy on petrol, the car was very easy to drive and could be made to seize short overtaking oporunities safely and attack steep hills with ease. It was not a sports car, but had front and rear ARBs and good road manners - really all you need for a small car for short daily 10>15 mile journeys - and it did all this even with four people on board. She chose the Polo, hated the 3 cylinder TDI - a friend had returned one after a month, didn't want the asmatic 1.9 SDI and I thought the 1.4 100ps looked too much like no low end torque and had a strange new way of making the camshaft - so the 1.4 75PS had to be the model of choice - hummmm maybe not! My wife's sister had a previous model Polo 1.6 as she lives in Canterbury and the VW dealer suggested she did not buy a Golf GTI as she would not be able to hold onto it!! That car was gutless, loved petrol and not very nice at all - she moved it on very quickly! Back on topic, there are quite a few people that like a 1.6 100+PS 16V engine in a car that size - just to make it a spirited drive - and why not? Roll on next Polo - but once again they will have dropped the newly adopted 1.6 16V - I've forgotten if the new Ibiza has that engine.

i have started the conversion and so far the only thing different is the 2001 gti bottom end has an oil cooler weras the 1.4 just has an oil filter but the cooler can be screwed out and a filter put on. the hole point of using the 1.4 head is to decrease/increase compression so it is better than the original gti. all the oil lines and water ways line up except for one wee hole that can either be blocked off or the head can be drilled to allow for it. the 1.4 16v uses a 10mm head stud and the gti uses an 8mm head stud so im gona try and just use a bigger washer on a 1.6 head stud. the timing belts for both engines are identical so it shouldn't be a problem. hopefully it can be mapped ok ther is a guy on club polo using a gti bottom and a 1.4 head and cams and an r1 inlet says its 154 bhp. hopefully the 1.4 flywheel will bolt on to the gti engine and its smaller so it will turn up faster slight mod not anything fantastic but still.

i dont want to sound like a gump or sumat but for all that messing around why dont you like buy a 1.8 T engine and runing gear and put that in or just buy a fr or cupra save a lot of messing plus you can do a lot more with a 18 turbo tunning wise, but its all up to you matey still it would be a great projet B)

or just buy a 1.9 tdi 100 or 130 and it will be the same on insurance, do more mpg, be more reliable and be good for 40+ extra bhp on just a remap?

Gump?! Gimp, maybe... Are you at all familiar with the dub scene? How many 1.8T's are there out there? If it didn't already have one, it's got one... A damn site more respect goes to the guy who thought out of the box and made the most out of what they had to begin with!

I do hear what you are trying to advise, in that the gains achieved from work done to the 1.4 are massively outweighed by the gains achievable from a 1.8T but self satisfaction wouldn't come close.

dubsan, if you haven't already, start a readers ride thread. I would be interested to follow your findings. I'm currently split between Rotrex C30-74 and Eaton M45 :D
