look on there and itll tell you the engine code. Tell us the code and well tell you what it is ;)

and the logbook next to engine number will be a code ADL 123456 or similar

looks very similar to an ABF on the outside as does the ADL/KR etc in fact same rocker cover but looking at the clutch cable/gearbox makes me guess it's a 1.8

97 on is reasonably safe for 2.0 16v ABF but even then just check out autotrader adversts and see how many can't get the 8/16v right in the first place

Yep thats true. Its the same on ebay. I was looking at a gti which was advertised as a 16v. Had low mileage etc on it. Looked at the first picture and said to myself 'Not a 16v'.

Only good thing is that you may be able to get some money knocked off.

under the cable tidy on the right hand side,it's STAMPED onto the top of the block.
96 was the cut off for the 1.816v iirc, some came with the big bumpers of that year so could be quite difficult to tell between that and a 2ltr 16v .but the rod change gear box is a big give away from the engine bay.
look for a 9a(short block) bottom end and make it 2ltr(found in old passats if memory is correct).thin on the ground but cheap if found.

It's deffo an ADL as it's my old GTi from way back when in 2000, looks like my old green filter is still on there aswell ??

Log book is wrong though as it lists it as an 1871cc instead of 1781cc (was like that when i owned it i was just to lazy to send it back to DVLA with the correct cc on in)
