DIY replacing spool in defect turbo

Question,

If I were to buy a defect turbo, could I DIY fit new seals etc and a spool if there was, say, too much play on the spool?

I saw kits selling on the internet, but wondering if anyone has done this themselves. Or is it truly necessary to get this done by a proper firm?

reason I ask, as obviously a (k04 023 :whistle:) turbo could become interstingly cheap. been offered one with excessive shaft play.

i had a similar idea a few months back and my mechanic mate said this wasn't a easy diy project with all the seals & bearings that are involved . likewise it seems right that it would need to be properly balanaced bearing in mind what rpm they spin up to!

you dont need to balance it if its marked when you strip it. Whats the worst that can happen reuvers...its only a few seals. Its not hard at all

Yes you do. Changing the seals and bearings will change its weight dist so the mark wont mean a thing. The worst that can happen is that the turbo can **** it self and it could ruin your engine.

Yes, you do. I'm assuming Ruevers means Compressor or Scroll or Shaft when he says "Spool", i.e. not just the seals and bearings (even then, I wouldn't rebuild one like pj1985 says, "what's the worst that can happen?")

They spin at around 20,000 rpm...

feel I was indeed referring to practically changing everything to new parts, ie only the housing would really stay untouched.

As for hybrid, I did think about that but I'm unable to find any info as to who here in Netherlands can do this.

Guess I let this one slide, and keep my eyes open.

I haven't really decided whether I'm going k04 though yet.

Benny I guess that would be an option.

but if I do go hybrid, then I'd probably do that to my K03s. I bought it new and its only run about 20K (km's) and I wouldn't have the hassle of finding a different manni and downpipe, aposed to the k04.

still undecided.

what would be the difference in power between the k03s hybrid and k04 hybrid if its not going to be to major than id stick with the k03s route...

as said, I haven't decided anything yet, and only just started looking at dfifferent options.

iirc then k04 hybrid could go to 300 maybe a bit more, and k03 hybrid to a good 270.

but as said, I still have a lot of reading up to do on these routes, before I decide/do anything

KO3s cant do 270 though... this has been gone over so many times now...

I was gonna say...

I am referring to hybrid here. I am very well aware that regular k03s will max out at 230-240hp. However if hybrid won't go to 270, then imo there isn't much use in doing this. As in the end getting it hybrid, lcr injectors, lcr tip 3' maff and remap will cost quite a bit, so i would like to see result...
