hya everyone, as you ve probably guessd im new to this forum lol so first of all hello to everyone :) ive been hunting around for a mk3 ibiza cupra for a wile now but am struggling finding one with decent mileage. I think i may have found one but it has a few issues around it, its up for 4 and a half thousand at the moment on pistonheads on a 02/52 plate with 38k, however the car is a previous cat c and is 2k over a service. Just wondered what peoples inputs where on the value of this as i feel its a little bit too high  any input off anyone would be very much appreiated as ive offered him four and he seems to thinks its worth more than that. Thanks for the help everyone

The mileage is good, but being a previous write off its not worth anything like 4.5k!

I'd say you should be looking at £3.5k for a cat C and i'd be wanting crash pictures so you know whats been repaired, receipts for all the parts to repair it and the repairers details.

tuff one this.

cat c can just be someone has keyed the car and the owner made a claim with his insure, it does not mean its had a bump but id say 90% of cat c cars have sufferd a nasty bang!

i buy and sell cars pick them up at uctions and punt them on, have a good look around the car mate, check the slam panel, the spare wheel well see if its nice and straight, another good one is to get a magnet and run it down the car (seeing if the magnet will stick, if it dont then its filler signs of accident)

a when was it regiseterd a cat c? if it was a year or 2 after the car was first registerd in 2002 then id say it must have been a very nasty bump as to write a 2 year old car off mate.

send me the link in a pm and il ring the guy for u if u like and ask a few questions :)

Seems far too expensive for a car thats been in an accident. If he won't accept 3,500 for it then walk away.

Id rather have a higher mileage Cupra for £3,500 than a damaged one if you cant find out whats been repaired.

Just to clarify is CAT C worse than CAT D, cos my mums Clio is CAT D and was in a rear end smash.

Category A - Vehicle must be crushed. All of it.

Category B - Car may not be returned to road. Parts may be sold.

Category C - Repairable. Possibly structural damage. Cost of damage (at main dealer prices and labour rates) is more than book value of bike.

Category D - Repairable. Probably non-structural damage. May have been economic to repair, but insurer doesn't want to.

there we go

Category A A vehicle which should have been totally crushed, including all its spare parts.

Category B A vehicle from which spare parts may be salvaged, but the bodyshell should have been crushed and the car should never return to the road.

Category C An extensively damaged vehicle which the insurer has decided not to repair, but which could be repaired and returned to the road.

Category D A damaged vehicle which the insurer has decided not to repair, but which could be repaired and returned to the road.

thanks for the help guys, i put an offer in at 4 and he said he wants bit more than that, i had a look round it yesterday and it does look pretty straight body wise, all the panels are lined up properly, he said it was front end impact over a year ago now before he bought the car, and it had new front bumper, wing, bonnet and suspension, however i noticed when he took me out in it the tracking was out by a mile which raised my suspisions. Im going down again tomorow with my mate who used to work for jennigs seat and if i can get the price down with him ill take it, but no way im paying any more than 4, im desperate for a cupra just hard trying to find one with low miles :( thanks for the responses everyone, and cheers JJ but i dont think he knows much about the damage as it was done by the previous owner before him, to be honest my alarm bells have been raised lol its just the mileage thats attracting me but there's the added worry of future problems if it hasnt been repaired properly :( ahh decisions!

You can do a lot better by far for the money

don't be blinded by the mileage - he will have paid bottom dollar for the car, and so should you.

I'd rather than a car with 60k on it that's not been smacked up than one with 40k that has....

personally id walk away mate, i get desperate for things too but you dont wanna be on here every night asking for help sorting out suspension issues or bent bits and bobs you cant see.

id rather have a legit 50ker than a dodgy 32k motor. i know its my 2p worth but how do you know its been done right? surely the tracking would be sorted out as part of the repair??

edit: ha ha beat to it^^^^

Couldn't agree more. In my eyes mileage is nowhere near as important as people make it out. Yes its nice to have a low mileage car, but I'd rather have a well looked after high miler than something with a dodgy history.

Plus if the cars been stacked then thats the best point to change its history after its been bought off the insurers.

Blank service book, lower the milage, re-do the service book.................. its quite easy.

If this guy didn't get the car with the evidence needed to sell it on at this value then he isn't going to get that kinda money. Write-offs are a cheap buy for a reason........... they're a big gamble.

yeah im starting to think i might back out of it as its just starting to seem more and mroe shady, for example hes only got part of the service history and when i asked to what extent was missing, all he could answer was its overd due a service and my current car has been nothing but problems so i dont want to be buying another car thats gona just be a money pit :( maybe ill have a look at some with mroe mileage as i know the engines are pretty solid on them too. thanks for the help guys :)

yeh leave it mate, just think when you buy it and then put the milage on it in the future it wont be anywhere near 4.5k and you will be stuck with it.

People get too hung up on mileage. If a car has been looked after properly there is no problem with a few miles on a good car. Better than a poorly looked after low mileage car. You could easily muller a car in 6 months and a few thousand miles so general good condition and maintenance is much more important. If a car has these things the mileage is by the by imo.

Even a 'stamped' service book is no proof of anything.

With all my cars I buy based on price, condition & risk

'mint' crash repaired cars should be - they will have new paint! could be bent / poorly jigged underneath, but will look pretty

low miles could mean it's sat in a breakers yard when it should have been driven
