Pads and Discs

Evening All,

I am in the position where i need to replace my front discs and Pads on my LCR. I have had a quote from Seat of £460 for stock replacements and the work - this seems like a lot to me. One of the local VAG specialists have quoted around £400 using standard Discs and Ferodo Pads - this also included a fluid change (never been done and its over 3 years old - prev owner).

I am just wondering as this all still sounds a bit steep if i am missing a trick here. Can anyone make the suggestion on the best options and potentially where to source the parts from myself to try and save come money.

Cheers guys

Alex.

speak to bill and badger 5 on the forum. ds2500 pads @ ~ £95, ebc plain discs @ ~ £120, race temp fluid @ ~ £50.
Changing pads and discs is pretty straight forward; diy could save you £££. For a fluid change I paid £40 labour, but depends where you go! (all prices from memory and may be wrong, but give a good indication:))

Thanks

I am down at Badger5 today as one of my mates is getting his S3 remapped. I will have a chat with him while i am there.

The setup above - is that a stock alternative or is that an improvement on what i already have?

Cheers

Alex.

Do you still get any brake fade when using the DS 2000 pads? The factory pads im using at the moment give me terrible brake fade, its especially noticeable now that im running a revo stage one map. I would be looking to change my pads in early july when my mot is due:think:

Defected!
I use EBC Turbo-Groove discs and Ferodo DS2500 pads and I cant fault them. I changed my disks and pads after a particularly frightening brake fade moment last summer and I've never had any problems since. Sounds like your main dealer has quoted you for genuine Brembo disks which were never going to be cheap.

If you want to stick with the O/E Brembo's try Dave at Seremotors, he's a sponsor on here and he is very very cheap.
I'v just fitted O/E Brembo's with Ds2500's and they are great

As i was up at Badger5 today i asked him while i was there. Bought some DS2500 Pads and EBC Discs - set for the front delivered for just under £250. Will get them fitted for £55 so nearly £160 saving on what Seat quoted me.

Have to also say Bill at Badger5 was really helpful and did a good job in remapping my mates S3.

good work :) if your feeling adventurous there is a guide to changing brembo discs and pads in the infobase section. I did mine not so long ago, simple enough and will save you another £55. Make sure you bed the pads in as per Bill's instructions to get the best performance from them.

Change my own - hmm - i am fond of stopping - not sure if my mechanical skills are up to it. Give me a PC to work on any day but i would be a bit worried about working on my own brakes.

You mention bedding in - Bill didnt really mention anything although we did have to dash when we left today. What should i be doing other than taking it easy for a few hundred miles??

quite the opposite of taking it easy as doing this will cause the friction material to "glaze" over.
this is what ferrodo say:
BEDDING-IN INSTRUCTIONS
To achieve optimum performance from Ferodo Racing brake pads please follow the instructions below:

1) Perform 25 to 30 trial brake applications, each of approximately 4 seconds, using around 50% of normal race pedal pressure. To shorten the procedure applications can be made along the straights as well as through bends.

2) On completion of trial applications return to the pit lane. Inspect the surface of the brake pads from the two wheels which have been working the hardest. There should be evidence of contact over the full pad area but without glazing. The pads are now ready to race.

Whilst we recommend that pads are inspected, if time does not allow this, assuming procedure (1) has been carried out and a short period of time has elapsed to allow the brake system to cool, the pads will be ready to race.

IMPORTANT: to optimize the performance and life of both brake pads and discs, during the bedding-in period heat in the braking system should be built up progressively.

Note that DS2500s are technically race spec :)

that instruction is DS2500 one.. HOWEVER, my advise if fitting new disks & pads, to ease into stopping progressively,

eg. 50 to a near stop light pressure 3 consequetive times, then drive a bit and allow to cool, then 60 to a near stop medium pressure 3 consequetive times, then drive a bit and allow to cool, then 70 to a near stop firm pressure 3 consequetive times, then drive a bit and allow to cool.

what you have done during this is ease a heat cycle into the disks as well as the pads bedding into the disk surface. allow to cool bit is important. nothing like thermal shocks from jumping on the brakes from higher speed for their first application. All bets are off if this is done.

regards
bill

not at all.. they perform very well from cold and are brilliant through the heat range imo

the fact that the box says "for racing use only", does that mean i have to brake like a maniac every 2 seconds?

nope

it says for race use only as they exceed the brake friction coefficient of std pads by >15%
better bite all round

Hi!

Anyone tried a Brembo MAX kit for a Mk1 Leon Cupra?
Does it deliver some performance?

Also, combined with Ferodo DS Performance or DS2500?

Cheers!

Has anyone had experience running them?
Im on the brink of making a purchase, but dont know which way to go!
