Maybe I'm misunderstanding or mis-terming a recon box. In previous motors I've blown gearboxes and been able to get a "reconditioned" one to replace the dead one at a fraction of brand new prices. I don't mean exchange mine. Anything up to £1,500 and I'll put it back on the road, otherwise lots of bits will be in the for sale section (assuming the for sale section is still going).

If just the clutch went you would be able to engage the gears within the gearbox but you would have no transmission of power to the gearbox so the engine would just rev out. Obviously in your case with the puddle of oil its the gearbox and even if the clutch hasnt been contaminated with oil it would be worth changing it while the box is out, unless its only recently been done of course.
The oils definately come through the clutch as it has leaked from the gasket between the gearbox and the engine.

You really need to have it apart before you know whats failed I reckon. Hopefully nothing too painful. With the gearbox swap, a lot of places base their cheapest prices on you returning your old box on exchange (and to have a deposit refunded). If yours has completely failed it might not be acceptable as an exchange unit. Can't see it costing £1500 though.

Spoke to 2 transmission places today and they both said that a sudden failure probably means there won't be anything worth rebuilding and that I should call Seat to get a price for a new one. Obviously I'd consider a breaking one before this option.

Hey i had a random gearbox failure on my LC, it had no oil leak tho, but a broken selector fork (wouldn't engage first or 2nd gear). If i remember rightly a new box from seat will cost in the region of £1,200. I was lucky however and was able to get my box reconned and whilst it was off go a new clutch and dual mass flywheel and clutch master/slave cylinder. That including Labour I got done for £1,300 which is a very good price.

You should be able to get a reconned box to replace yours with and all the bits you need for around the £1,500 mark I think and hope mate!

I know how frustrating it is so gutted for you!

If you need a 2nd hand gearbox with warranty I can point you in the right direction. Check out that one in the 'for sale' section as someone mentioned earlier.

It will cost you Nowhere near £1500 including fitting and that with a new DMF etc

you could pick up a 2nd hand gearbox for about £200, i sold a engine with the gearbox for £500, out of a 2003 cupra with 6 speed box, only done 30k, i would of thought, about £100-£150 to take and re fit box and fit new clutch, £200-£250 for the box, and £150 for the clutch, so all in between £500-£600

Sounds like a good price to get it done for.

Still struggling to get a scrap box. Spoke to Seat who want £3250 for a new box as it is likely my casing has a hole in it and is not exchangable.

Vagtech are seeing what they can do. I don't need a car for work or anything so I'm not in too much of a hurry.

Was the one in the for sale section a no go then?

 what planet are they on? LOL my step dad races with someone who had a custom built Simmonites racing gearbox built for a little over 2k. Another guy I know had a 300ZX racing box built for that sort of money too...

Sorry about your car hope you find a good box somewhere at a nice price :)

Surprised the fella above sold engine and box with low mileage for only £500! that's a steal.

Good news!!!! My LC is back from the dead and I'm very happy to be driving again.

Here's the old box with its nasty hole, bits of metal and a crack down the side:

So to celebrate I washed her and did a nice new picture:

Cost me £1150 in the end, Vagtech did a great job finding the box and kept the labour costs low. Recommended as always.

The price included a new MAF which had failed but obviously unlrelated to the gearbox problem.
