what options for JS manifold, also what else to get done whilst engine is out

(put this in the ibiza section but realised its probably better suited here)

I had a search but couldnt really find an answer, is there any other turbos that fit the JS manifold, i'm currently running an IHI VF34 but the engine is getting rebuilt with uprated internals and it seems a shame to sit on the border with the ability to go higher, is there anything else that fits? and will be a decent upgrade?

someone mentioned an 18G in one of the threads i looked at? would this work? what would be the pros/cons. I'm not looking for anything over 400 really, ideally a happy and reliable 370-380

Also keeping in mind the target i'm after is there anything else worth doing to the engine whilst its out? e.g large port/porting? i'm not massively technically minded when it comes to stuff like this

finally if i was to port/bore out engine would the VF34 be able to give me much more power reliably?

VF34 wont give you any more power reliably. TD05 big 16G may give you a little more but not much, 18G woud be the next step up from that. Not sure what real power that an give you. Probably around the 350bhp mark. 20G is the next step up and I think wilko was running one at 370bhp ish but not sure how it drove. The main reason TD05 range is better is that they are rebuildable. Dont get hung up on peak power. Too big and you will be waiting too long for it. Not sure what fits on the Jabba Mani out of the TD05 turbos. Coud go for an Owens Hybrid but thats more power than you are looking for I think and may have fitment issues.

cheers for the reply, i did see the owens turbo but to be honest that really is over what i was hoping for, have you got any idea how a vf34 would be bored out to 1.9 with a large port head/mani/tb etc.. to go with it? would it even be worth going large port on a vf34 at all? i'd be happy to stick with it if i can get a reliable 330-350 out of it....

I know its definately not all about peak figures but a mate of mine has a mk5 polo stripped with a k04 setup well and he sat level with me...i'm hoping to have a decent pull on him but to be fair its still running at 286bhp according to the dyno run a few months back, im just not sure what more i can expect from the current setup without straining the turbo even if its running a bit poorly

as you know a vf34 is fast spooling anyway so save your money reboring and changing the head.stick some rods in and go for the vf34 hybrid:thumbup:

so would boring out/larger head not improve power output as well as lag?? seems like the perfect solution, if i'd see gains id bore it out & save for the turbo later when the engines all sorted!! :)

there are plenty of cars making power on standard bore and heads,as an example Tim Orpens 500bhp Audi TT uses standard bore, smallport head, standard inlet mani and tb.it's got low comp pistons and rods:)as regards to lag,is there any on a vf34?just do the rods and some heat treated valves mate.

wondering how much more flow/power he would get if he was running larger ports tho

Yeah I hear what you are saying caney is it not wortwhile whilst the rebuild isgetting done though, isit VERY expensive? Would it be worthwhile for the money for the power I'm after? it wouldn't be a case of choosing to either go large port/larger bore or hybrid I'd just do both but it would take longer

And surely in the mean time I would see positive gains on even the standard vf34 not just less lag, and when I do get round to the hybrid I will see even more with less stress on the turbo?

what else would I need to do to go hybrid (380) safely?injectors, fuel pump? I'm taking a guess saying my poor old chargecooler won't be up to the job? what IC would be recommended?

Bill I'm guessing you are the guy to ask, did u ever run the vf34 on this sort of setup?at what point did u decide large port/larger bore was worthwhile?

We are working very closely with Owens to produce a number of turbos, we would deffinatly be able to get something to work as well as the VF34 but with the bit extra like you want... give us a ring if you want to run through some options 01733 211779

VF34 wont flow anymore reliably mate. Even with more displacement. More power means different turbo. If you just have the intank pump from S3 or LCR then you will need an inline pump...bosch 044 or walbro. 550cc injectors would be ok for this power if you have them but again it depends on what you have already. Intercooler would be Pro Alloy or custom.

Personally if I was in your position and money wasnt an issue I would do 1.9 with large port and go for a TD05 possibly hybrid over the VF34 hybrid. If you are going to do it then do it properly and only do it once etc etc. Give you a good engine spec for if/when you want more power in the future aswell then.

I ran a few VF34's  and more housings
P18 housing, then a few P20 housings, then PE1820 hybrid which when max's got 390bhp, and drive near the same spool as VF34/P20 - Ultimately it is very much choked by its exhaust housing and small turbine

Pushing things hard 1.6-1.8bar boost the EGT's were just too high for any IHI housing and JS manifold. Crazy Paved cracks and warped a couple mani's

Big 16G seems a reasonable spec unit, but I dont have personal experience of it I'm afraid. Owens units are good, and if there are more build trim options being made available then this is a viable choice.

Being underslung, and if you stick with the JS mani, then fitment issues and clearances will determin what you can run.

I changed from Pe1820 to an FP Green, which was way way more powerfull. 390bhp to 485bhp when I changed. some 500rpm laggier, but full power was 8krpm and sustained linear pull from 4200rpm. much bigger turbine, and garrett comp wheel I think from memory. downside is they are too large on the comp housing side to fit onto a JS mani.

Owens vs PE vs big 16G all options for you to look at I guess.

JS know their kit well, and the Owens unit looks good.

I had the same dilemer mate......
I am currently running 335ish with oem internals (small port head) and the JS vf34 stage 3 kit, beautifully smooth and capable and more than capable of upsetting M3 (E46) drivers.

I decided to go the whole hog, AGU large port head (ported/flowed), inconel/nitrade valves, scat rods, JE 1.9 pistons and the Owens stage 2 (440[ish] bhp once it's done).

Jabba will be doing a photo diary when my car goes in, it might be worth waiting to see what happens and the results of mine before you finally make your mind up....just a thought.

Best of luck with whatever you choose.
Regards,

Steve:)

upto 380 bhp =td05h 18g
upto 400 bhp =gt2871r
upto 450 bhp =gt3071r
upto 500bhp =gt3076r
upto 700bhp= gt35

you will not beat the above turbo's in the spec's i have given, imo hybrids of any type are compromised in some way and to say garrett know what there doing is a understatement!
If your going to uprate internals then why skimp on a turbo kit and use a manifold with short runners and compromised turbo size.

Garrett GT28RS on a tubular manifold is a good combo...I use this albeit on the APR kit.

Early spool from 2500 onwards.

Gives 350bhp/350lbs on my car with a nice delivery.

Good luck
