MK5 GTI or MK1 Cupra R?

I cant have the looks of the new leon. Just no way. But Id like the engine and tranny.... can do a swap when the time is right :)

HI Guys

Right now i could buy a Cupra R with partexing my Fabia VRS but im wondering if i should hold off?

Last year taught me an awful lot. Don't hold off for ANYTHING & live each day like it's your last.

If you wanna do something, do it! For people like us, a car is an emotional purchase as well as a means of transport. Buy a car with your heart as much as your head. If that means getting a Cupra now & enjoying it, then chopping it in for a GTi when the funds allow, then why not?

SRStdi, you also said yourself... "i have my heart set on a Cupra R.... always have". So did I, that's why I ended up buying one late last year, I just though F@*K IT!!!

I hope this offers a different perspective on the original post.

Enjoy whatever you end up buying & drive safe, I'm sure you'll love it whatever it is!

R69 - you are totally right, im waiting for the right one to appear as right now there arent many on the Autotrader.

Im thinking of a Red one or the darker grey ones, would have black but my Leon Cupra Tdi is this colour.

Is the Red paint on the LCR prone to fading like the red on earlier golfs???

yeah the red and the yellow are both very prone to fading,and is quite hard to get the colour out. you can always go for a candy red respray :p thats what i was originally after lol

my opinion on the comparison;
the mk5 golf is comparable with the mk2 cupra as the mk2 leon is based on the mk5 golf chasis, whereas the mk1 leon is based on the mk4 golf chasis...so the mk1 leon is a bit outdated in gadget terms...sort of an unfair comparison :(

The cupra R is the one to have (although I'm biased). As standard cars go they are pretty well sorted. Although I am already considering remap!

I thought about other cars as well i.e. Mk5 golf GTI, Focus ST etc but they were about twice the price of what I paid for my 55 plate LCR (I brought it last Dec).

Did you post this on a VW forum too, be interested to find out if they all said buy the Golf. I love my FR+ but sometimes think i should have gone for an LCR.

Own a LCR (210) + have driven a Mk5 GTI.

If you're town-based, TBH the LCR can be a PITA - the low-speed ride is tediously harsh, it crashes into even the shallowest pot-hole etc & the splitter means that most speed bumps are taken at walking pace. However, the LCR feels more stable on motorways & its suspension setup is great on A/B-roads - loadsa grip, excellent for rebound & fairly supple. GTi feels a wee bit softer.

LCR's brakes are stronger & don't forget that the LCR posted a much quicker time than the Mk5 GTI round Top Gear's track. [B)]

Autocar's tests have the LCR quicker - eg 0-60 6.5sec (210 LCR) vs 6.7sec (GTI w/ DSG 'box) - but 32mpg touring for LCR compared to Mk5 GTI's 36mpg.

IMHO I'd only forgo a LCR for a Mk5 GTI if latter had DSG, which is fan-bleedin-tastic. EDIT: seems that there're reliability issues with the DSG 'box. For example, a dealer that has a 'Mk5 GTIs wanted' ad on PistonHeads won't take cars with DSGs...

LOL no i havent posted it on there, but yes your right it would probably be by the Golf...

Ive owned the Cupra tdi and think its a better car than the mk4 golf IMO however i have been in a mk5 and its a nicer place to be but that comes at a price.

MK2 Leons especially the Cupras are lovely but on the inside the dash especially lets it down....
MK1 leons look great on the out side, better than the MK2... but again the inside is only slightly better than the MK2's as it straight out of a audi a3.
The MK5 golf has the best of both, great modern interiors and pretty good on the outside, however the i think the Cupra R has it beat it just looks more agressive.

Ive decided on a LCR mk1 as for my money i can get a great 55 plater where as im only just entering Mk5 territory with the cash i have. And with my recent experience its better to buy one of the last examples of a car as they would of hopefully ironed out all the issues??? LOL

Update - now selling my cupra Tdi to fund this which should get me a bit more cash - i just dont like the way a diesel drives.

So this changes things slightly, I can get a 54 plate GTI with about 46k on the clock for £9250. But as this is the roll out edition versus a end of the run 55 plate cupra r would the GTi potentially have more niggly faults as its one of the first GTi's???

I brought my 55plate cupraR for alot less than £9250 and it only had 41k miles. You have to look hard but there are dealers who don't know what they have got on their forecourts.
