Blue smoke means oil.

So this means that somewere, oil is seeping through into the cylinders and sitting.

It could be as simple as worn rings which as causing this to happen.

If under warrenty get it checked out, if not take it to a garage and get it checked.

Yes, however it seems most in really low temps do this. So I wouldnt actually say there is deffo something wrng with a car that has "abit" of whiteish/blue smoke simple on start up. Depending on amounts, temps etc then yes get it checked out!

If its bothering you then i'd say get it checked just for peace of mind.

Not saying this is the case but one simple fault could lead to something big.

After all if its something alot of tdi owners get, then a small letter could be wrote to Seat about it.

Lets not forget that diesel is an oil and for a few seconds on cold start the engine does not always burn clean. This blue smoke is quite possibly just diesel that is not being burnt fully.

Maybe get your glow plugs checked, that is if you do use them

Yep, timing out could cause the diesel burn to be a bit dirty, that could make a bit of blue on startup.

I remember on my very old 1983 (A REG) astra diesel you had glow plugs and also a timing advance for cold starts. If you pulled the timing advance out when the engine was warm it would make blue smoke and also make real bad tractor noises.

thanks for the info, i now feel a little bit better about it and its not just the dealer trying to fob me off. how does the timing get out of sync all by itself? just streching of the cambelt? or you think its always been out?

I doubt that the "static" timing was out, Probably just the injection timing was adjusted. Don't know if this is done electronically or by phisically moving a sensor or something.

The timing is adjusted on cold starts when the secondary air pump is running. Would have also been fiddled with when you got it remapped I guess?

it happens on cold start as the engne inside has cold air which has been sat since the last startup, mine does this and i looked into it. the cold air is dense but for some funny reason been sat under pressure in the cylinders when fired it burns as white, it is nothing to worry about but daunting at first.

^^^^I'm not getting that, sorry.

Everyone knows that blue smoke comes from burning oil, Chip pans make blue smoke just before they catch fire. My theory that diesel is an oil and doesn't combust clean/hot for a second or two makes more sense to me.

That is unless there is engine oil leeking past the valve stem seals, Ford CVH engine stylee.
